Marvel Darkhold Destiny Release Date, Decks and Prices
The third Marvel set is six months out and already on preorder. The MSRPs match Star Trek; the early listings don't, so there is no reason to pay them yet.
Verdict
Marvel: Darkhold Destiny releases April 9, 2027, with Commander decks at $74.99 MSRP. The few preorder listings on October 21 sit well above that, so wait for your store or a big retailer to open preorders at list price.

The Darkhold Destiny release date is April 9, 2027. Wizards of the Coast announced Magic: The Gathering | Marvel: Darkhold Destiny on October 10, 2026, and preorders opened the same day. It is the third Marvel set, after Marvel's Spider-Man and Marvel Super Heroes.
Short version for your wallet: the list prices are the same as Star Trek's, product for product. The handful of preorder listings we found on October 21 are well above list. Nothing about this set needs money six months early, so wait until your local store or a large retailer opens preorders at MSRP.
Darkhold Destiny release date and the dates around it
| Date | What happens | Source |
|---|---|---|
| October 10, 2026 | Set announced, preorders open | Wizards announcement |
| February 2027 | Tie-in Marvel comic by Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly, digital release | Wizards announcement |
| April 2, 2027 | WPN early access for the Prerelease Pack (Prerelease week starts) | WPN product page |

| April 9, 2027 | Global tabletop release of the set and the four Commander decks; the comic's print edition also lands in April | Wizards announcement, WPN |
The Arena date comes from the MTG Wiki's event list. Wizards hasn't published a Darkhold Destiny events page yet, so treat April 6 as likely, not confirmed. It fits the recent pattern: Star Trek reaches Arena three days before paper, as our Star Trek MTG release date guide lays out.

Those listings are thin: one to four per product. That's normal this far out. Sellers price high, and the number drops once more stores list stock. Our TCGplayer Market Price explainer covers why a price from one or two listings tells you very little. Right now every product costs more on TCGplayer than its MSRP, and the Arcanum Bundle is listed at double.
Note the name: Wizards' listing calls the main pack a Booster Pack, not a Play Booster. It is "balanced for Limited play" and costs the same as Star Trek's Play Booster.
The four Commander decks
Each deck is a ready-to-play 100-card list with 30 new-to-Magic cards, ten double-sided tokens, a deck box and a strategy insert. The box art gives each deck two theme lines; the colors come from the mana symbols on the box.
| Deck | Colors | Themes on the box | Character on the box |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gods of Asgard | Red, green, white | Power matters, Godlike gear | Thor |
| Strange Academy | White, blue, black | Spellcasters, Blink | Doctor Strange |
| Lords of Hel | Black, red | Generate tokens, Sacrifice | Hela |
| Midnight Sons | White, black | Gain life, Vampires | Blade |
Wizards hasn't named the face commanders or posted decklists yet, and Scryfall shows a single Commander-code card so far, Gargantos, the Endbringer, a Scene Box card. Without lists, any "which deck is best" pick would be a guess. If you collect precons by character, buy the one with your favorite on the box; everyone else can wait for decklists. Once they're out, the useful question is which swaps each deck needs, the way our Avengers Assemble upgrade guide handles the Marvel Super Heroes deck.
What's in the set so far
Twelve main-set cards were on Scryfall on October 21, five of them basic lands. The other seven are The Darkhold, Hela, Mistress of Darkness, Hela's Arcanum, Magik, Illyana Rasputin, Rise from the Nether, Penance Stare and Temple of Khonshu. Wizards calls it an all-new story set in the Marvel Universe, not an adaptation of a comic arc, and the set includes Scene Boxes and new Booster Fun treatments.
Three of the first cards shown at the reveal. Hela's left panel is a Vengeance spell, cast only from the graveyard. Card images: Wizards of the Coast, via Scryfall.
The MTG Wiki adds the mechanics shown at the reveal panel:
- Arcane returns as a spell type, for synergy and flavor only; splice does not come back.
- Vengeance is a new spell half on permanent cards that you can cast only from your graveyard.
- Dimension is a new card type.
- Valiant and the pawprint mechanic return.
The MTG Wiki lists the main set (code MDD) as Standard legal and the Commander cards (code MDC) as legal in Commander, Legacy and Vintage; our Universes Beyond explainer covers why crossover sets reach Standard at all. For the rest of the year's calendar, see our 2026 MTG sets list.
Wizards' announcement video runs through the story setup and the first cards:
How players took the announcement
On r/magicTCG the NYCC reveal thread split fast. One of the first replies was a flat "Even more Marvel? Meh." The answer under it shrugged at the shrug: "This cannot possibly be a surprise at this point. The very first thing we'd heard about Marvel was that it was a multi-year deal," and another player summed up the middle ground: "I can be both unsurprised and disappointed." Our read: the better selling point is the one Wizards leads with, an original story built around the magic side of Marvel rather than a retelling of famous comic panels.
Should you preorder now?
No, not at today's prices. Every Darkhold Destiny listing live on October 21 asks more than the box price, and six months out there is nothing to gain from paying it. The one thing to watch is supply of premium products: in October Wizards warned that some Star Trek Commander decks and premium products may reach stores after release day, depending on region. If you want a Collector's Edition deck or an Arcanum Bundle, reserve it at MSRP from a store you trust once it lists them, and ask what it does if the shipment is late.
How we checked: dates, products and contents from Wizards' October 10 announcement and the WPN product page; MSRPs from the WPN product data; preorder listings from TCGplayer search on October 21, 2026; Arena date and mechanics from the MTG Wiki; card counts from Scryfall, October 21, 2026.
