Reality Fracture Commander Preview: Mirrored Pairs and Karn

For a Reality Fracture Commander preview, start with the type line: only five cards in the set's headline pairs can lead a deck, the two Lilianas, Tam, the Possibility and the two Karns. Every Ajani, Garruk, Chandra and Jace card is a planeswalker, so it goes in the 99 no matter how famous the name. The set has been out since October 2, 2026, and everything below comes from the printed card text, plus the first EDHREC decklists for those five commanders.

PATCH: Updated Oct 10, 2026. Re-checked every card against Scryfall: Garruk, Curse Breaker's -4 and the blue Chandra's +1 now match the printed text, and the Echoverse and booster descriptions now follow Wizards and Draftsim.

What are Reality Fracture's mirrored pairs?

Reality Fracture's Echoverse is a "what if?" version of the Multiverse built by Jace Beleren, and its story fills it with warped versions of familiar characters, per Wizards of the Coast. Each Play Booster holds three mirrored-pair cards, two of which are a guaranteed pair of each other, per Draftsim's set coverage. The Lorwyn 5 here are Jace, Ajani, Liliana, Garruk, and Chandra. Four of them face an Echoverse version of themselves in an enemy color, and players call those colorshifted; Jace's partner is a different character, the green-blue Tam, per MTG Wiki's set page. For Commander, read each card on its own: a famous name tells you nothing about its color identity, its card type, or whether it can lead a deck.

The Lorwyn 5 Pairs, Card by Card

Ajani Resolute and Ajani Unrelenting

fra-195fra-195Shop on TCGplayer Ajani Resolute is a two-mana white planeswalker built around life gain: whenever you gain life, it gets a loyalty counter, and its 0 ability gains you 1 life, so using it adds a loyalty counter each turn. Its -4 makes a 2/2 Cat Soldier that grows when you gain life, and its -10 is a +2/+2 emblem for your creatures. That is a lifegain engine at {1}{W}, and it only fits white decks.

fra-242fra-242Shop on TCGplayer Ajani Unrelenting is the opposite shape: a six-mana red planeswalker that makes a 2/2 Cadet token whenever you activate a loyalty ability. Its +1 gives your creatures +1/+0 and haste, its -2 discards your hand and draws a card per creature you control, and its -3 deals 4 damage to each creature except tokens you control. Read it as a token and board-wipe card for red creature decks.

Liliana the Repentant and Liliana the Faultless

fra-231fra-231Shop on TCGplayer Liliana the Repentant is a two-mana black 2/2 that mills two cards whenever another creature or planeswalker you control enters. Its exhaust ability ({5}{B}, once per game) returns a creature or planeswalker card from your graveyard to the battlefield with a +1/+1 counter on Liliana. Because it is a Legendary Creature, it can lead a Commander deck, and that deck would be black self-mill and reanimation.

fra-200fra-200Shop on TCGplayer Liliana the Faultless is a one-mana white 1/1 that gains you 1 life whenever another creature or planeswalker you control enters. For {1}, {T}, and a discarded card, it gives another creature or planeswalker you control hexproof until end of turn. It can also lead a deck, and it pairs directly with Ajani Resolute: an Ajani entering triggers Liliana's life gain, which in turn adds a loyalty counter to Ajani. The first decklists already lean on that: on October 21, 2026, Ajani Resolute was in 480 of the 842 Liliana the Faultless decks on EDHREC.

Garruk, Curse Breaker and Garruk, Veiled Butcher

fra-259fra-259Shop on TCGplayer Garruk, Curse Breaker is a five-mana green planeswalker that draws a card whenever a creature with power 4 or greater enters under your control. Its -3 makes a 4/4 trample Beast, and that Beast triggers Garruk's own draw ability, so the -3 is a creature and a card. Its +2 untaps up to two lands, and its -4 lasts until your next turn: whenever creatures attack one of your opponents, they get +2/+2 and trample until end of turn.

fra-229fra-229Shop on TCGplayer Garruk, Veiled Butcher is a five-mana black planeswalker that exiles opposing creatures instead of letting them die. Its +2 gives a creature -4/-1 until your next turn, its -2 makes each player sacrifice a creature (you get a 4/4 trample Beast if you sacrificed one), and its -3 makes each opponent discard two cards, with you drawing a card for each opponent who did not discard two nonland cards. Against several opponents, the draw clause is checked once per opponent.

Chandra, Jace and Tam

fra-244fra-244Shop on TCGplayer Chandra, Torch of Defiance is the red half and fra-212fra-212Shop on TCGplayer Chandra, Chill of Compliance is the blue half. The blue Chandra supports a noncreature-spell plan: its first +1 is Surveil 1, and if a noncreature, nonland card goes to your graveyard that way, it goes to your hand instead. Its -X taps a target artifact or creature and puts X stun counters on it. Neither Chandra can lead a deck.

fra-216fra-216Shop on TCGplayer Jace, Reality Sculptor scales with your Islands through Empower Jace, and it's a planeswalker, so it goes in the 99. Its partner, fra-276fra-276Shop on TCGplayer Tam, the Possibility, is a {1}{G}{U} 2/4 Legendary Creature that makes your planeswalker spells cost {1} less, and for {W}{U}{B}{R}{G} and a tap it proliferates once for each different planeswalker type among the planeswalkers you control. That activation puts all five colors in its color identity, so Tam leads a five-color planeswalker deck even though it's cast with green and blue.

The set's other big Jace, fra-43fra-43Shop on TCGplayer The Theorist, Jace Beleren, is a mythic outside the pairs: it draws you an extra card in each opponent's draw step and makes 1/1 Illusions, and it's a planeswalker for the 99 too.

Seven of the twelve cards in the pair table cost four mana or less, and the other five cost five or more, from Garruk and Jace at five up to Karn, Gilded Guardian at ten.

Karn, Argent Defender and Karn, Gilded Guardian in Commander

fra-279fra-279Shop on TCGplayer Karn, Argent Defender costs {2}, is a 1/3 Legendary Artifact Creature, and reads: "Artifacts and creatures entering the battlefield don't cause abilities to trigger." It has no color identity, so it can sit in any Commander deck, and as a Legendary Creature it can also be the commander of a colorless deck.

What it shuts off matters more than the one-line text suggests. It stops every enters trigger for creatures and artifacts, including your own, and it also stops "whenever a creature enters" triggers that watch other permanents. It does not stop enters-tapped or enters-with-counters effects, which are replacement effects, and it does not stop landfall for ordinary lands, because those lands are not artifacts or creatures. A deck full of creature enters-triggers is the worst place for it. A deck of lands, planeswalkers, and spells has far less to lose, so check your own list before you slot it in.

It also clashes with this set's other cards. Garruk, Curse Breaker's draw ability and Liliana the Repentant's mill both trigger on a creature entering, so Karn turns both off. That makes Karn a hate piece against enters-heavy tables, and it fights with those Lorwyn 5 cards in your own deck.

The table reaction was blunt from day one. In an r/EDH thread asking about Karn as a commander, one commenter wrote: "The truth is they can see your Karn a mile away. He will be taken down by opponents affected by this effect." (u/n1colbolas on r/EDH) Another reduced it to "Its just a torpor orb... Literally." (u/meisterbabylon) Both comments, posted September 24, agree on the cost: a card that shuts off everyone's triggers also makes you the target.

fra-272fra-272Shop on TCGplayer Karn, Gilded Guardian is the opposite: a five-color Legendary Artifact Creature with vigilance and trample, with hybrid costs ({2/W}{2/U}{2/B}{2/R}{2/G}, mana value 10). When it enters, you draw a card for each color among your other artifacts. Its color identity is all five, so it is a five-color commander or a card for decks that already run a lot of colored artifacts.

What the first EDHREC decklists say

Eighteen days after release, the decks people have logged on EDHREC back the type-line reading. Tam is far ahead of everything else, the five-color Karn is a distant second, the white Liliana has pulled ahead of the black one, and the Karn that shuts off triggers barely registers as a commander.

The other four held their order overnight while each count grew by two to three percent. The planeswalkers tell the other half of the story, since they can only live in the 99:

The Theorist is the one Commander players picked up, in roughly one eligible deck in forty. A lot of that play runs through Tam: Ajani Unrelenting sits in about two of every three Tam decks and The Theorist in a little under two of three, by Tam's EDHREC page. Both Garruks are the misses: the black one shows up in about one deck in three hundred that could play it. If you're opening packs for Commander, the two Jaces are the planeswalkers worth keeping, and the Garruks are the ones you can trade away.

Other Notable Cards From the Set

Solitary Cell ({R}{W}, rare artifact) exiles a nonland permanent an opponent controls with mana value 3 or less until it leaves, and can draw a card by discarding a legendary card. It is a cheap answer for red-white decks.

Generous Revival ({2}{W}) returns a creature card with mana value 3 or less from your graveyard to the battlefield with a +1/+1 counter, and has flashback {4}{W}, so it can be used twice.

Cast Away Doubt ({2}{B}) draws two cards and deals 2 damage to each player. In Commander, that is 2 damage to every player at the table.

Compel Brutality ({1}{G}) is a bite effect: your creature or planeswalker deals damage to an opponent's creature or planeswalker. Perfected Theory ({U}) makes a creature's base power and toughness 1/1 or 4/5 until end of turn.

Our Take: Read the Type Line Before the Name

Check whether a card is a creature before you plan around it as a commander. Of the twelve cards in the pair table, only the two Lilianas, Tam and the two Karns are creatures, so only they can lead a deck. If you want planeswalkers, Tam is the commander: it makes them cheaper, the proliferate ticks them all up at once, and it's the build players are logging most by a wide margin. If you'd rather start cheap, we'd take Liliana the Faultless with Ajani Resolute in the 99, the cheapest engine here at {W} and {1}{W}. Karn, Argent Defender is the one to be careful with. The Reddit comments above show how a symmetrical trigger shutoff plays at a table, its tiny deck count says most players agree, and our read is that it only belongs in a deck whose own plan doesn't run on enters triggers.
