Most Expensive Standard Cards in MTG: Buy, Hold or Skip
The priciest Standard-legal card shows up in one of 755 Challenge decks. Here are the expensive cards Standard players actually need, and which ones to wait on.
Verdict
Buy The Theorist, Wan Shi Tong or Icetill Explorer only for the deck that plays them, skip Terror of the Peaks and Overlord of the Balemurk with rotation about three months away, and hold off on shock lands until Star Trek reprints all ten on November 13.

The most expensive Standard cards start with The Soul Stone, $76.20 for the cheapest nonfoil copy on October 30, 2026, and almost nobody plays it in Standard. It turned up in one of the 755 Magic Online Standard Challenge lists from October 1 to 21, where it carries its alternate name, The Terminus of Return. If you build Standard decks, the list that matters is the expensive cards those decks actually run, and that one starts with Cavern of Souls at $49.51, in 146 of the 755 lists. A week earlier it started with The Theorist, Jace Beleren at $54.49; on October 30 the cheapest Theorist was $40.53.
Here's what we'd do with each of them, then the dated price table, why these prices move, and the cheaper copies of the same cards.
Buy, hold or skip
Buy, for the deck that plays it. The Theorist (Azorius Control), Wan Shi Tong, Librarian (Dimir Midrange) and Icetill Explorer (Mono-Green Landfall) are expensive, but they don't rotate in early 2027, and their decks play them in almost every list. If you're building one of those decks, there's no cheap way around them.
Hold if you own it, skip if you don't. Cavern of Souls is in 146 lists, but it leaves Standard at the next rotation. It's also legal in Pioneer and Modern, so a copy you own keeps a use. Buying one only for Standard means paying $49.51 for about three months of play.
Skip. Terror of the Peaks ($29.11) and Overlord of the Balemurk ($17.69) leave Standard in early 2027 too, and neither is a staple of a named deck. Terror of the Peaks is in 19 lists, 17 of them four-color black-green-red-blue piles.
Wait. All ten shock lands get a Star Trek printing on November 13. The cheapest copies cost $6.18 to $10.25 today, and Steam Vents alone is in 190 of the 755 lists.
The most expensive cards Standard decks play, October 30
These are the 14 priciest cards that appear in at least 10 of the 755 Challenge lists, main deck or sideboard. The price is the cheapest nonfoil printing on Scryfall, which shows TCGplayer market prices. Any printing of a Standard-legal card is legal in Standard; more on that below.
| Card | Cheapest copy | Lists (of 755) | Most lists in | Leaves in early 2027? | Our call |

fra-43
fra-43Shop on TCGplayer The Theorist is spread across three blue decks: 37 of the 40 Azorius Control lists, 36 unnamed blue-black lists and 8 Dimir Midrange lists. If you play blue, we'd buy it before anything else in the table, and it costs about $14 less than it did on October 23.
fdn-58
fdn-58Shop on TCGplayer Bloodthirsty Conqueror is the trap in the table. It costs $35.07, and only 12 of the 62 Orzhov Life Gain lists play it. The other 50 Orzhov Life Gain lists leave it out, so we wouldn't buy it first.
msh-21
msh-21Shop on TCGplayer The Mind Stone and Quantum Riddler are the same story in two other decks. The Mind Stone is in 24 of the 26 Jeskai/Azorius Artifacts lists and almost nowhere else. Quantum Riddler shows up in all 26 Azorius Momo lists and in 18 other lists.
The priciest Standard-legal cards nobody plays in Standard
Sort every Standard-legal card by price and the top of the list belongs to Commander. The Soul Stone, Roaming Throne and Buster Sword are three of the five most expensive Standard-legal cards, and between them they appear in one Challenge list. On EDHREC on October 29, the same three were in 177,269, 648,379 and 177,505 Commander decks. The table has every Standard-legal card that cost $30 or more on October 30 and showed up in fewer than 10 of the 755 lists.
| Card | Cheapest copy, Oct 30 | Challenge lists (of 755) | EDHREC decks, Oct 29 |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Soul Stone | $76.20 | 1 | 177,269 |
| Roaming Throne | $47.78 | 0 | 648,379 |
| Buster Sword | $46.72 | 0 | 177,505 |
| Ugin, Eye of the Storms | $39.70 | 4 | 99,343 |
| Agatha's Soul Cauldron | $38.06 | 1 | 117,546 |
| Vaultborn Tyrant | $37.68 | 0 | 94,548 |
| Bloodletter of Aclazotz | $34.55 | 0 | 173,359 |
| Delney, Streetwise Lookout | $34.22 | 1 | 167,380 |
| Ouroboroid | $34.02 | 5 | 109,471 |
| Gleaming Splendor | $33.79 | 0 | 93,992 |
| Doubling Season | $30.78 | 0 | 506,450 |
fdn-216
fdn-216Shop on TCGplayer Doubling Season got into Standard through Foundations, and none of the 755 lists run it. When a "most expensive Standard cards" list leads with cards like this one, you're looking at Commander prices. A Standard deck never needs them.
Why Standard card prices move
Standard play. The Theorist is the clearest case. Its regular printing was $63.49 on October 19, when we checked Reality Fracture card prices, $54.94 on October 23 and $40.53 on October 30, a drop of about 36% in eleven days. Some finance players expected it to keep falling. On r/mtgfinance, u/d7h7n put it this way: "It's standard rcq season and all the grinders want to feel good playing UW control. It'll go back down to $30-40 eventually." That was one player's call, and a week after we first quoted it the card sits just above that range.
Rotation. Six sets leave Standard after the Prerelease of Nauctis: The Sunken Realm, which releases February 5, 2027. On MTG Arena, Wizards puts 2027's rotation on February 2, alongside the set's Prerelease events there. That takes Wilds of Eldraine, The Lost Caverns of Ixalan, Murders at Karlov Manor, Outlaws of Thunder Junction with The Big Score, Bloomburrow and Duskmourn with it. Our Standard rotation 2027 guide has the full list. A card whose only Standard-legal printings come from those sets leaves too, and three cards in our table do.

lci-269
lci-269Shop on TCGplayer Cavern of Souls shows why rotation doesn't hit every card the same way. Its cheapest copy on October 30 was a Lost Caverns of Ixalan promo at $49.51, the 2012 Avacyn Restored printing was $49.90, and Scryfall lists the card as legal in Pioneer, Modern and Commander. Standard is one of several places it's played.

dsk-113Shop on TCGplayer Overlord of the Balemurk and
otj-149
otj-149Shop on TCGplayer Terror of the Peaks lean on Standard much more, which is why we'd skip them.
Reprints. Star Trek releases on November 13, 2026 (MTG Arena gets it on November 10; see our Star Trek release date guide), and Scryfall already lists a Star Trek printing of all ten shock lands. A reprint adds supply, and the shock lands are everywhere in Standard:
| Shock land | Cheapest copy, Oct 30 | Lists (of 755) |
|---|---|---|
| Steam Vents | $10.15 | 190 |
| Watery Grave | $10.14 | 176 |
| Hallowed Fountain | $6.74 | 136 |
| Blood Crypt | $9.04 | 118 |
| Sacred Foundry | $10.25 | 107 |
| Godless Shrine | $7.86 | 98 |
| Overgrown Tomb | $7.35 | 87 |
| Stomping Ground | $6.65 | 57 |
| Breeding Pool | $9.07 | 34 |
| Temple Garden | $6.18 | 11 |
eoe-261
eoe-261Shop on TCGplayer Watery Grave is the one Dimir players need, in all 79 Dimir Midrange lists. If you need a playset this week, buy it. If your next event is after mid-November, we'd wait and see where the price settles once Star Trek copies reach stores.
Cheaper copies of the same card
The Magic Tournament Rules allow any printing: "Cards from older sets that share the same name as a card legal in Standard may also be played." Masterpiece-style printings count as long as the card is already legal in the format. So the cheapest copy is often an older set, a promo or a special printing, not the one from the Standard set.
| Card | Standard-set copy | Cheapest legal copy | You save |
|---|---|---|---|
| Simulacrum Synthesizer | $25.28 (The Big Score) | $17.58 (Marvel Universe) | $7.70 |
| Undercity Sewers | $15.55 (Murders at Karlov Manor) | $8.64 (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Source Material) | $6.91 |
| Elspeth, Storm Slayer | $51.82 (Tarkir: Dragonstorm) | $45.36 (Tarkir: Dragonstorm promo) | $6.46 |
| Overlord of the Balemurk | $20.84 (Duskmourn) | $17.69 (Duskmourn promo) | $3.15 |
| Cavern of Souls | $50.30 (The Lost Caverns of Ixalan) | $49.51 (The Lost Caverns of Ixalan promo) | $0.79 |
eoe-192
eoe-192Shop on TCGplayer Icetill Explorer has the same pattern: an Edge of Eternities promo copy is $21.35 against $24.83 for the set version. When you shop, search the card name across every printing instead of the set you opened it in.
If the expensive cards add up to more than you want to spend, our cheapest Standard decks from the Challenge top 32 starts from the other end. For what "market price" means on a TCGplayer listing, see TCGplayer market price explained.
Watch the price talk
MTGGoldfish's podcast spent part of its October 12 episode on The Theorist's price climb, which is useful background for the drop since.
How we checked
Prices are the cheapest nonfoil USD price across every paper printing on Scryfall, fetched October 30, 2026 at 09:10 (UTC+7); the October 19 and 23 prices for The Theorist come from our earlier runs. Play counts come from the 755 Magic Online Standard Challenge decklists of October 1 to 21, 2026 (25 Challenges), main deck or sideboard, with archetype names from the same labels as our Standard metagame tier list; "unnamed" means a list our labels don't assign to a named deck. A card leaves Standard in early 2027 if every Standard-legal printing from a set released since September 2023 is in one of the six leaving sets. EDHREC deck counts are from October 29, 2026. Prices move daily, so check the card again before you buy.
