Partner Commanders in MTG: Rules for Every Partner Type
Every partner ability lets you have two commanders, but each one only pairs with its own kind. That one rule settles most deckbuilding questions.
Verdict
Partner abilities let you run two commanders in one 100-card deck, but only with a card that has the same partner ability. Plain partner pairs with plain partner, partner with pairs with one named card, and a Background only goes with a Choose a Background creature.

Partner commanders let you run two commanders in one Commander deck instead of one. The catch is that there isn't one partner ability, there are several, and each only pairs with its own kind. Get that right and the rest of the rules are short.
What partner does
Rule 702.124a calls partner abilities keyword abilities that "modify the rules for deck construction in the Commander variant" and says each one "allows you to designate two legendary cards as your commander rather than one." The deck is still 100 cards: rule 702.124b says it "must contain exactly 100 cards, including its two commanders," and both start in the command zone.
Your colour identity is the two commanders combined. Rule 702.124c says anything that refers to your commander's colour identity "refers to the combined color identities of your two commanders." That's the main reason people play partners: two cards that each fit a two-colour pair can make a three- or four-colour deck.
Every partner type, and what it pairs with
The Comprehensive Rules list five partner abilities: plain partner, partner with a name after it (written with a dash on the card), partner with [name], Choose a Background and Doctor's companion. Here's what each one allows, using the rule text and a real pair.

| Ability | Pairs with | Example pair |
|---|---|---|
| Partner | Any other card with plain partner | Kraum, Ludevic's Opus and Tymna the Weaver |
| Named partner (Partner, then a dash and a name) | A card with the same named partner | Cecily, Haunted Mage and Bjorna, Nightfall Alchemist (Friends forever) |
| Partner with [name] | Only the named card | Pir, Imaginative Rascal and Toothy, Imaginary Friend |
| Choose a Background | A legendary Background enchantment | Abdel Adrian, Gorion's Ward and Agent of the Iron Throne |
| Doctor's companion | A Time Lord Doctor with no other creature types | Amy Pond and a Doctor |
Partner
Plain partner is the open version: two legendary cards can be your commanders "if each of them has partner." Kraum, Ludevic's Opus (blue-red) and Tymna the Weaver (white-black) show why this matters: together they cover four colours.
Named partner abilities, including Friends forever
The newer templating prints Partner, a dash and a name, and both cards need the same name. The rules list four of these names: Character select, Father & son, Friends forever and Survivors. Cecily, Haunted Mage and Bjorna, Nightfall Alchemist both have the Friends forever version, so they can lead a deck together. Neither can pair with a plain partner card.
Partner with [name]
Partner with is a closed pair. Pir, Imaginative Rascal can only partner with Toothy, Imaginary Friend, and the other way round. Scryfall's ruling is direct: "A creature with a 'partner with' ability can't partner with any creature other than its designated partner."
It also does something outside deckbuilding. Rule 702.124j says it represents two abilities, the second being a trigger that lets a player search their library for the partner when it enters. Scryfall's ruling on Pir confirms that this "still triggers in a Commander game," so if your other commander somehow ends up in your library, you can find it.
Choose a Background
A creature with Choose a Background pairs with a legendary Background enchantment, not another creature. Abdel Adrian, Gorion's Ward can take Agent of the Iron Throne as its second commander. Rule 702.124k adds the reverse limit: a Background "can't be your commander unless you have also designated a commander with 'choose a Background.'" On October 22, 2026 Scryfall listed 30 Commander-legal Backgrounds and 32 Commander-legal cards with Choose a Background.

Doctor's companion
Doctor's companion pairs with "a legendary Time Lord Doctor creature card that has no other creature types." Amy Pond has it, which makes her the most interesting card in this section, because she also has Partner with Rory Williams.
You can't mix partner types
Rule 702.124f settles it: "Different partner abilities are distinct from one another and cannot be combined." A card with plain partner can't pair with a Partner with card, a Friends forever card or a Background.
A card with two partner abilities picks one. Rule 702.124g says you "may choose which one to use when designating your commander, but you can't use both," and that nothing "can ever let a player have more than two commanders." Scryfall's ruling on Amy Pond spells out the practical case: "you can't have Amy, Rory, and the Doctor as your commanders at the same time. Amy must choose one of the two."
How two commanders play
Once the game starts, the two commanders are tracked apart. Rule 702.124d says they "function independently" except for colour identity:
- Commander tax counts each one separately, so casting one never raises the cost of the other. Our commander tax guide covers the rest of that rule.
- Commander damage is counted per commander. Twenty combat damage from Kraum and ten from Tymna is not a loss; see commander damage rules.
- "Your commander" effects pick one. Rule 702.124e says an effect that refers to your commander "refers to either one," and you choose which when an effect acts on it. Scryfall's ruling on Command Beacon, for example, says it puts "one of your choice into your hand, not both."
What players build with partners
The appeal is the odd pair nobody else at the table runs. In an r/EDH thread in October asking for players' most unique partner commanders, u/Danimalistic wrote: "I’ve been kinda eyeballing [[thrassios]] and [[nadier]] to make a wet-elves tribal deck even tho elves and merfolk supposedly have no synergy. I will make the synergy lol"
The top reply in the same thread used the colour rule the other way, to build around a cheap pair: "Two of the stranger things partners are 2 cmc each, one bw the other ur," wrote u/1003mistakes, who built a four-colour deck around them.
How we checked this
On October 22, 2026 we read rules 702.124a to 702.124n in the September 25, 2026 Comprehensive Rules file, pulled the Oracle text and rulings for every card named here from Scryfall's API, and ran Scryfall searches for Commander-legal Backgrounds and Choose a Background cards.
Our take
Partners are the easiest way into three- and four-colour Commander, and we'd start there if a single legendary card in your colours doesn't exist or doesn't excite you. Pick the pair for colour identity first and abilities second, because the identity decides every other card in the deck. Our best partner commanders tier list ranks the most-built picks of each type. If you're new to the format, read our Commander guide and the colour identity explainer before you build, then build your first Commander deck around the pair.
