Wizards built a whole draft product around Commander, and the new cards it brings are the part that ends up in your deck at home.

Verdict

The 60 new cards are legal in Commander on November 13, 2026. The first box you could buy came inside Festival in a Box: Atlanta 2026 at $249.99, and it sold out on October 19, the day it went on sale; a box on its own has no price yet.

Mystery Booster Commander Edition is a convention draft product, and the cards you'll actually keep are its 60 new-to-Magic cards: they become legal in Commander on November 13, 2026, the first day of MagicCon: Atlanta. The rest is either a reprint you may already own, or a playtest or Arena-born acorn card that stays at the draft table.

So the useful question is which of the four card groups you opened. Wizards dates the new cards, keeps acorn and playtest cards out of Constructed, and has priced only the bundle that carries the first box.

What Is Mystery Booster Commander Edition? (quick answer)

It is a booster built for Commander Draft: you open one of three boosters and draft two cards per pick, similar to Pick-Two Draft, then build a Commander deck from what you took. Alongside the new cards, Wizards counts 134 different Future Sight frame cards, 10 traditional foil acorn-stamp cards, 121 playtest cards and over 2,000 cards from Magic's history. You can play it at MagicCon: Atlanta on November 13-15 and at future Magic events; at home, only if you got one of the Festival in a Box bundles before they sold out.

What Happened: What Wizards Announced

Lead Designer Gavin Verhey went all-in on the new-to-Magic cards. Wizards gives the other counts separately and does not say whether the Future Sight frame cards overlap the new ones.

Each booster is designed for Commander Draft, and Wizards spells out the procedure. Groups of eight draft and then split into two games of four. You open one of three boosters and take two cards per pick, passing left, then right, then left. After the draft you build a 60-card deck from your pool plus any number of basic lands, inside your commander's color identity. At MBC Draft events, any commander with one or fewer colors can be treated as having partner, which rescues a lot of awkward two-color pools.

Some of the new commanders feature the new rulebreaker ability word, which lets you bend the rules of Commander, for fun, of course. That statement names no card, so the concrete examples below come from Scryfall's MBC listing.

What the Rulebreaker Commanders Actually Do

Wizards' feature page does not name a single rulebreaker card. Scryfall's MBC listing shows eight of the 60 oval-stamp cards with an ability that begins "Rulebreaker," and all eight can be a commander. Four of them are quoted below.

CommanderCostWhat its rulebreaker line allows
Whtz, the Bibliophile{1}{W}{U}"A deck with this commander has no maximum deck size."
Grizzlegom, Hurloon Hero{5}{R}{G}"A deck with this commander can have any land cards."
Valko Indorian{3}{B}"A deck with this commander can have Phyrexian cards of any color identity and any basic land cards."
Maular, the Next Evolution{5}{G}{G}"A deck with this commander can have creature cards with mana value 7 or greater of any color identity and any basic land cards."

Whtz, the Bibliophile, Grizzlegom, Hurloon Hero, Valko Indorian and Maular, the Next Evolution card faces side by side, each with its Rulebreaker line Four of the eight rulebreaker commanders. Card images: Wizards of the Coast, via Scryfall.

The other four are Seluma, Light of Aysen, which allows Angel cards of any color identity; Tolabow, Loch Rascal, which lets instants and sorceries include one extra color of your choice; The Unluckiest Planeswalker, which allows Aura cards of any color identity and can be your commander; and The Everforger, which allows artifact creature and Equipment cards of any color identity.

Wizards' October 19 update bulletin backs this up in the rules. New Comprehensive Rule 903.5e lets rulebreaker abilities work before the game begins, and Wizards adds that "this only works if the card with the rulebreaker ability in question is your commander." The same bulletin rewrites Tolabow's line, whose printed text Wizards admits was "hard to understand and had many unintuitive results." The new Oracle text spells it out: "the color identity of instant and sorcery cards in your deck can include one color of your choice not in your commander's color identity." If you open a Tolabow, play it by that wording, not the one printed on the card.

If you want a second opinion on which new legends are worth a deck, The Command Zone gave them a full episode; its show notes call the set "full of powerful, wacky, new legends to brew."

Scryfall currently lists all 70 stamped cards as not legal in Commander, so the legality dates Wizards gives are the ones that apply.

Where and When You Can Get It

Mystery Booster Commander Edition made its debut at Gen Con, where attendees opened the first boosters. The first box you could actually buy came inside Festival in a Box: Atlanta 2026, which went on sale October 19, 2026 on MagicSecretLair.com at just under $250, two per customer while supplies last. Supplies didn't last: the store's banner now reads "Sold out", and the MTG Wiki's news log says it took 21 minutes.

What Festival in a Box: Atlanta 2026 holds
1 Mystery Booster Commander Edition box
1 Secret Gallery: Atlanta Foil Edition Secret Lair drop
4 Festival in a Box promo cards

That price covers the whole bundle, so it tells you little about what a box on its own will cost. If you only want to draft it, Wizards says it will be available at MagicCon: Atlanta on November 13-15 and at future Magic events. Wizards gives no store release date and no price for a single box.

Under the announcement on r/magicTCG, nobody expected the bundle to sit around, and they were right. "Anytime there's a new mystery booster, the first festival in a box sells SUPER fast," u/thespiffyneostar wrote, adding that the product "will be around for at least a year of festivals in a box." Another reply asked for the thing Wizards hasn't promised: a version that "should be available at lgs as well" (u/yajo345).

Star Trek's global tabletop release is also November 13, 2026, the same date the new MBC cards become Commander-legal and the first day of MagicCon: Atlanta.

The remaining gaps are concrete. Wizards has priced only the Festival in a Box bundle, not a box on its own, gives no store release date, and its page does not explain whether the new cards overlap with the Future Sight frame cards.

Frequently Asked Questions

Wizards says the new cards enter Commander legality on November 13, 2026.

How does Mystery Booster Commander Edition Draft work? Groups of eight draft and then split into two games of four. Each player opens one of three boosters and drafts two cards per pick, passing left, then right, then left. When are the new Mystery Booster Commander Edition cards legal in Commander? The new-to-Magic Mystery Booster Commander Edition cards become legal in Commander on November 13, 2026. Scryfall currently lists the MBC stamped cards as not legal in Commander, which matches that future date. Wizards gives Legacy, Vintage and other Eternal formats a later date, January 1, 2027.

When are the new cards legal in Legacy and Vintage? The new-to-Magic cards are legal in Legacy, Vintage, and other Eternal formats on January 1, 2027. That date is separate from their Commander legality date of November 13, 2026. Wizards states both dates for the new-to-Magic MBC cards, while the acorn and playtest categories have different tabletop or Constructed-format treatment.

Where can I get Mystery Booster Commander Edition? The first full box came inside Festival in a Box: Atlanta 2026, a Secret Lair bundle that went on sale October 19, 2026 on MagicSecretLair.com and sold out the same day. In person, you can draft it at MagicCon: Atlanta from November 13-15 and at future Magic events. Wizards has not priced a box on its own or given a store release date.

What are acorn stamp and playtest cards? Acorn-stamp cards use digital-only mechanics that are not supported by Magic's tabletop rules. Playtest cards are not legal in any Constructed formats, but they are playable in Mystery Booster Commander Edition Draft and Sealed. Wizards does not give these categories the same Commander or Eternal legality dates as new-to-Magic cards.
