Verdict

To beat Dimir Midrange, play 4c Control, Dimir Reanimator or Orzhov Lifegain: 4c Control is 21-10 against it in real matches since Reality Fracture. Whatever you play, deal with the one-mana fliers before Kaito arrives, kill Kaito on your own turn, and bring Torpor Orb unless your deck runs on creatures entering.

To beat Dimir Midrange in Standard, bring a deck that already has a winning record against it, and play the early turns around one card: Kaito, Bane of Nightmares. 4c Control, Dimir Reanimator and Orzhov Lifegain all beat Dimir more often than they lose in real Magic Online matches, each in its own way. Below are the decks, what to do on each part of the game, the sideboard card that hits most of Dimir's creatures at once, and the rules details that decide close games.

Decks that beat Dimir Midrange

Dimir Midrange has played more recorded matches than any other Standard deck since Reality Fracture, so it's the deck you'll meet most. The table turns its row on mtgpile's win matrix around: each deck's match record against Dimir, for every opponent with ten or more matches as of October 22.

Three rows have both a clear margin and a real sample: 4c Control, Dimir Reanimator and Orzhov Lifegain. Boros Dragons has the second-best rate but only fifteen matches, and Izzet Spellementals is ahead by three. The aggressive creature decks you might expect to run Dimir over, Mono-Green Landfall and Izzet Prowess, lose to it, and white-blue control with The Theorist has the worst row of any deck in the table.

What Dimir Midrange does

_Falcon_'s list won the October 14 Challenge, it's the list our Dimir Midrange guide explains card by card, and mtgpile still shows Dimir lists from October 21 that match it card for card. For beating it, three facts about the 60 matter:

  • Twenty-one creatures, most of them cheap. Four Dream Beavers and three Spyglass Siren are one-mana fliers, and fifteen of the creatures have mana value 2 or less.
  • Fourteen creatures have flash. Floodpits Drowner, The Wondrous Wasp, Tishana's Tidebinder and four Enduring Curiosity come down on your turn, usually to tap your attacker or punish a spell.
  • Four Kaito, Bane of Nightmares, put into play by ninjutsu off an unblocked one-drop, often on turn three.

The removal is cheap and narrow. Three Requiting Hex only hit creatures with mana value 2 or less, Shoot the Sheriff can't kill an outlaw, and the counterspells are soft: We Say Thee Nay! asks you to pay two (four if they tap creatures for it), Theorix Charm only counters noncreature spells unless you pay two, and Spell Snare only hits mana value 2.

Turns one to three: stop the ninjutsu

Kaito's ninjutsu needs an unblocked attacker. Every blocker that stops a 1/1 flier, and every removal spell for one, pushes Kaito back a turn, and a Kaito that arrives on turn five is a much smaller problem than one on turn three.

Time your instant-speed removal for when Dimir attacks, not for your own turn or the end of theirs. A creature only counts as unblocked once blockers are declared, so a flier you kill as it attacks never becomes the unblocked creature Kaito needs.

The best early cards in the decks above:

  • Fire Magic (two in 4c Control's main deck): one red mana deals 1 damage to every creature, enough for Dream Beavers, Spyglass Siren and Yuriko. With two more mana it deals 2, which also kills Floodpits Drowner and The Wondrous Wasp.
  • Pinnacle Starcage (two in lucadaky's Azorius Control): exiles every artifact and creature with mana value 2 or less. Against _Falcon_'s list that's every creature except Tishana's Tidebinder and Enduring Curiosity.
  • Seam Rip (four in the Boros Dragons sideboard, one in Orzhov's): exiles one of those cheap creatures for one white mana.

When Kaito lands, kill it on your turn

Kaito is hard to kill on Dimir's turn and easy on yours. During Dimir's turn, with loyalty on him, he's a 3/4 Ninja creature with hexproof. During your turn he's only a planeswalker, so creatures can attack him and any spell that hits a planeswalker can target him: Get Lost, Erode, Bitter Triumph, and 4c Control's Inevitable Defeat, which also can't be countered.

So hold that removal for your own turn, and send attackers at Kaito early. Each +1 gives Dimir an emblem that makes its Ninjas bigger for the rest of the game, Kaito included. His −2 taps one of your creatures and puts two stun counters on it, which keeps it tapped through your next two untap steps. And his 0 surveils two and draws a card if you lost life that turn, so a Kaito left alone turns every hit from a 1/1 flier into a card.

On your turn, give them nothing to flash in

Dimir does its best work on your turn: flash blockers, We Say Thee Nay!, Bitter Triumph in combat. The decks that beat it either turn that off or play around it.

  • Voice of Victory (four in Boros Dragons): your opponents can't cast spells during your turn. No Floodpits Drowner on your attacker, no counterspell for your Dragon.
  • Cavern of Souls (three in Boros Dragons, two in Dimir Reanimator): creature spells of the type you name can't be countered.
  • Mistrise Village (one in 4c Control): {U} and a tap make your next spell that turn uncounterable.
  • Spare mana. Because We Say Thee Nay! and Theorix Charm are both "unless its controller pays," casting your key spell with two extra lands up beats most of Dimir's counters. If Dimir has untapped creatures with total power 2 to tap for teamwork, plan on four.

Sideboard: Torpor Orb and Duress

Torpor Orb is the card that does the most against Dimir's creatures. It reads "Creatures entering don't cause abilities to trigger," and seventeen of _Falcon_'s twenty-one creatures do their work on entering: Drowner's stun, Wasp's tap, Tidebinder's counter, Beavers' drain, Siren's Map, Yuriko's choice, and Wan Shi Tong's counters and cards. Under an Orb, a flashed-in Drowner taps nothing. Azorius Control and 4c Control both carry two in the sideboard, and Strongmind's Dimir list ran two for the mirror on October 18. It doesn't touch Kaito or Enduring Curiosity, so you still need answers for those.

Leave it in the sideboard if your own deck triggers on creatures entering. Scryfall's ruling is clear that Torpor Orb also stops "other triggered abilities that would trigger when a creature enters," so it turns off Orzhov Lifegain's Hinterland Sanctifier and Case of the Uneaten Feast along with Dimir's creatures.

Duress takes a noncreature, nonland card, and Kaito is a noncreature card in hand. Taking him early takes away the turn-three ninjutsu. 4c Control already plays two Duress in the main deck, and our 4c guide brings in Pilfer and Negate as well for this matchup.

Rules details that decide close games

  • Ninjutsu isn't casting. It's an activated ability that puts Kaito onto the battlefield tapped and attacking, so a counterspell can't stop it. The answer has to come before blockers or after he lands.
  • Kaito's hexproof needs Dimir's turn and loyalty. On your turn he can be targeted like any planeswalker.
  • Wan Shi Tong is a two-drop on the battlefield. X counts as 0 for mana value everywhere except the stack, so Pinnacle Starcage and Seam Rip hit Wan Shi Tong however many counters he has.
  • Enduring Curiosity comes back. When the creature dies it returns as an enchantment that still draws Dimir a card whenever one of its creatures deals combat damage to you. Get Lost hits both versions, and exile effects like Inevitable Defeat stop it from coming back at all.

Who beat Dimir in October Challenges

The records above aren't abstract. In the October 18 Challenge 16, MarcoBelacca95's 4c Control beat Dimir Midrange three times on the way to the trophy, twice in the Swiss and 2-0 against Strongmind in the final. On October 19, McWinSauce's Orzhov Lifegain beat _Falcon_ and Ale_Mtg, both on Dimir, in the Swiss. And in the final of the October 15 Challenge 16, 2360299909's Boros Dragons beat kthanakit26's Dimir 2-1.

It runs the other way too. On October 20 arianne's Dimir knocked lucadaky's Azorius Control out in the quarterfinal, then lost the semifinal 1-2 to univerce's Jund Sacrifice.

What players are saying

A comment with 47 likes under CovertGoBlue's September 4 Dimir Midrange video came from the Dimir side: "Dimir midrange most important lesson against control: You are the beatdown." If you're on a slow deck, expect Dimir to race you with fliers and flash creatures rather than trade.

Under the same video, another viewer went back over game one, where CovertGoBlue's opponent went for damage and lost: "The correct play was to point both Helix and Thor damage at Kaito, killing him, and hope you don't have a removal spell for the 5/5." Point the damage at Kaito.

MTG Chicago filmed a 35-minute paper match between Dimir Midrange and Izzet Spellementals, one of the decks with a small edge on it, at a Standard Regional Championship Qualifier at Boar's Hat Gaming in Elgin, Illinois, posted October 16.
