Orzhov Lifegain Standard Deck: 7 Top 8s From 13 Lists

17 min readBy Reid MarshLast reviewed
Amalia Benavides Aguirre, Haliya and Ajani Resolute cards fanned out, the white-black lifegain core of the Orzhov deck

The Orzhov lifegain Standard deck put 7 of its 13 top-32 lists into the top eight across nine Magic Online Standard events played October 1 to October 7, 2026. That is a 53.8% top-eight rate, against 27.0% for all 267 lists, and the highest rate of any archetype with 10 or more lists in this sample.

The white-black deck is built on cheap creatures that each gain life when another creature enters, then pays that life off with Amalia Benavides Aguirre, Ajani Resolute and end-step triggers. The win came from ejk in Standard Challenge 16 Special on October 7 (27 players). This guide uses the published lists and Scryfall oracle text.

TL;DR: BaseMTG's classification finds 13 Orzhov Life Gain lists among 267 top-32 decklists, with seven top-eight finishes and one win. Hinterland Sanctifier, Haliya, Liliana the Faultless and Case of the Uneaten Feast each gain 1 life when a creature enters, and Amalia, Ajani, Starscape Cleric and Lunar Convocation turn each of those gains into value. Eleven of the 13 lists run at least one card first printed in Reality Fracture.

Orzhov Lifegain Standard Deck: What It Is in Standard (quick answer)

Orzhov lifegain in Standard is a white-black creature deck, classified here by one rule: its nonland spells are only white and black. Its creatures and permanents gain life as creatures enter, and its payoffs trigger whenever you gain life.

It wins by growing Amalia, Ajani and Starscape Cleric off those gains, then draining, drawing or reanimating at the end step. All 13 lists share three dual lands, and a core of six cards appears in 12 of them.

Key Takeaways

  • Orzhov lifegain appears in 13 of 267 top-32 lists, or 4.9%, with 7 top-eight finishes and 1 win.
  • The 13 placements were 1, 2, 4, 4, 4, 5, 8, 16, 17, 17, 18, 20 and 23.
  • Shattered Sanctum, Godless Shrine and Concealed Courtyard appear in all 13 lists. Amalia Benavides Aguirre, Hinterland Sanctifier, Haliya, Moseo, Case of the Uneaten Feast and Lunar Convocation appear in 12.
  • Ajani Resolute is in 11 lists, and Liliana the Faultless and Enlightened Confidant are in 10 each. All three were first printed in Reality Fracture.
  • Seven named cards in the winning list rotate out in early 2027, including Amalia, Lunar Convocation and Zoraline.
  • The first Standard metagame report after Reality Fracture used the first 160 lists; this guide adds the events of October 6 and 7.

Overview: Orzhov Lifegain Standard Deck After Reality Fracture

The sample is nine Magic Online Standard events from October 1 to October 7, 2026. Each event page publishes its top-32 decklists, or every decklist when fewer than 32 players entered, giving 267 lists. BaseMTG sorted them by key-card rules, so "Orzhov Life Gain" means a list with white and black nonland spells only. That is a hand classification, not an official label.

The 13 Orzhov lists came from these events: Standard Challenge 16 on October 1 (34 players): 3; Standard Challenge 32 on October 2 (45 players): 3; Standard Challenge 32 on October 2 (48 players): 1; Standard Challenge 16 on October 4 (38 players): 1; Standard Challenge 32 Special on October 6 (44 players): 2; Standard Challenge 16 Special on October 7 (27 players): 3. Two pilots account for four of the 13 lists, so the lists come from 11 different players.

Why the Orzhov Lifegain Standard Deck Works

The deck plays 26 creatures in 38 nonland cards, and four of its permanents gain life whenever a creature enters.

Four permanents gain life on every creature entry

Hinterland Sanctifier fdn-730fdn-730 card artfdn-730Shop on TCGplayer costs {W} and is a 1/2: whenever another creature you control enters, you gain 1 life. Liliana the Faultless fra-200fra-200 card artfra-200Shop on TCGplayer costs {W}, is a 1/1, and gains 1 life when another creature or planeswalker you control enters. Case of the Uneaten Feast costs {W} and gains 1 life when a creature you control enters. Haliya, Guided by Light costs {2}{W}, is a 3/3, and gains 1 life when it or another creature or artifact you control enters.

The winning list runs 14 copies of those four cards. With all four out, a single creature entering produces four separate 1-life triggers. Under rule 119.9, "whenever you gain life" abilities trigger once for each source that causes you to gain life, so each of the four is its own life gain event for every payoff below.

Payoffs that count each gain

Amalia Benavides Aguirre costs {W}{B} and is a 2/2 with ward, pay 3 life. Whenever you gain life, Amalia explores, then destroys all other creatures if its power is exactly 20. Ajani Resolute costs {1}{W} and starts at 2 loyalty. Whenever you gain life, it gets a loyalty counter. Its 0 ability gains you 1 life, and its minus 4 creates a 2/2 Cat Soldier token named Ajani's Pridemate that gets a +1/+1 counter whenever you gain life.

Starscape Cleric costs {1}{B}, is a 2/1 with flying that can't block, and makes each opponent lose 1 life whenever you gain life. Offspring {2}{B} adds a 1/1 token copy when it enters.

End-step triggers cash in the turn's life

Lunar Convocation costs {W}{B}. At your end step, if you gained life this turn, each opponent loses 1 life. If you also lost life this turn, it creates a 1/1 black Bat with flying. For {1}{B} and 2 life it draws a card, so paying its own cost satisfies the second condition.

Enlightened Confidant fra-5fra-5 card artfra-5Shop on TCGplayer costs {1}{W}, is a 2/1 with lifelink, and surveils 1 at your end step if you gained life, putting a card with mana value at most the life gained into your hand if it hits the graveyard. Haliya draws a card at your end step if you gained 3 or more life. Moseo, Vein's New Dean costs {2}{B}, is a 2/1 flyer, makes a Pest that gains 1 life when it attacks, and at your end step returns a creature card with mana value at most the life you gained from your graveyard to the battlefield.

What Reality Fracture Adds to Orzhov Lifegain

Three cards first printed in Reality Fracture sit in the core of the deck: Ajani Resolute (11 of 13 lists, average 2.6 copies), Liliana the Faultless (10 lists, average 2.6) and Enlightened Confidant (10 lists, average 3.4). Eleven of the 13 lists run at least one, and the winning list plays 3 of each.

All three cost one or two mana. Liliana the Faultless adds another entry trigger, Ajani Resolute is a payoff that also gains 1 life with its 0 ability, and Enlightened Confidant adds lifelink to the end-step plan. The sample has no lists from before the set, so it cannot show how the deck looked without them; it shows only that the deck leans on them.

Step-by-Step: How to Play Orzhov Lifegain in Standard

1. Sequence the one-mana engines first. Hinterland Sanctifier, Liliana the Faultless and Case of the Uneaten Feast each cost {W}, so a first-turn engine is available. Starting Town enters untapped on your first three turns, and Godless Shrine eoe-254eoe-254 card arteoe-254Shop on TCGplayer can enter untapped for 2 life.

2. Make every creature entry count. Each creature you cast triggers every engine on the battlefield. Cast creatures one at a time when a payoff is already out, because each separate gain triggers Amalia, Ajani and Starscape Cleric.

3. Grow Amalia and Ajani, then use them. Amalia explores for every gain. Ajani gets a loyalty counter for every gain, so its minus 4 token can come early.

4. Check the end step before passing. Lunar Convocation, Enlightened Confidant, Haliya and Moseo all look at the life you gained during the turn. Starscape Cleric's drain happens on the gain itself.

5. Keep removal and the late game for the right moment. Erode destroys a creature or planeswalker for {W}, and its controller may search for a basic land. Emptiness and Zoraline are the top end, and Zoraline can pay {W}{B} and 2 life when it enters or attacks to return a nonland permanent card with mana value 3 or less from your graveyard.

What Rotates Out in 2027

Standard rotation happens once per year after the first premier set Prerelease of the year, when the six oldest sets leave. The Standard format page lists those six as Duskmourn: House of Horror, Bloomburrow, Outlaws of Thunder Junction with The Big Score, Murders at Karlov Manor, The Lost Caverns of Ixalan and Wilds of Eldraine. The 2027 rotation timing has its own guide.

Tips for Piloting Orzhov Lifegain in Standard

  • Count life gain events, not life. A payoff that says "whenever you gain life" triggers once per gain event, so two separate 1-life gains trigger it twice, and a 2-life gain triggers it once.

  • Ward costs life, and so does mana. Amalia's ward is pay 3 life, Godless Shrine can cost 2 life, and Starting Town costs 1 life when it makes colored mana. Track your total before paying.

  • Know when Lunar Convocation makes a Bat. It needs both a gain and a loss in the same turn. Paying life for Godless Shrine, Starting Town or its own card draw counts as losing life.

  • Hold Erode for a creature that matters. It destroys a target creature or planeswalker, but its controller may search for a basic land and put it onto the battlefield tapped.

  • Read the sideboard cards literally. Strategic Betrayal makes the opponent exile a creature they control and their graveyard. Seam Rip exiles a nonland permanent with mana value 2 or less until it leaves. Decorum Dissertation draws two cards and loses 2 life, and it has paradigm.

What Players Are Saying About Orzhov Lifegain

Two Arena players brought the deck up on their own in r/spikes' weekly deck check thread of October 5, 2026, while discussing a different list. One of them wrote, “Orzhov life gain has kinda taken over the spot of very little interaction and playing at sorcery speed and overrunning the opponent in value - it’s lower to the ground and has less awkward hands along with more resilience.” (liceking). A reply in the same thread said, “lifegain seems to be extremely strong atm, it hardly fizzles too.” (troop357).

Both comments come from Arena players in one thread, so they describe the Arena queue rather than the Magic Online lists counted in this guide.

The deck also has video coverage. The description of Ashlizzlle's video says Reality Fracture “has given the Standard Orzhov Lifegain deck a bunch of powerful new cards to work with”. Their list is a separate build from the lists here, and we did not compare the two.

Our Take on Orzhov Lifegain

Based on the figures above, Orzhov lifegain is a dependable top-eight deck rather than a dominant one. It makes up 4.9% of the field, with 7 top-eight finishes and 1 win, and the same lands appear in all 13 lists. If you want to play it, the numbers support copying the shape of the winning list: 22 lands and nothing at four or five mana. They do not support calling it the best deck in the format.

That is our judgment, and it rests only on the 267 lists from the nine Magic Online events and the two Arena comments quoted above.

Method and Data Checks

We read the nine Magic Online Standard event pages for October 1 to 7, 2026, counted every list with two independent parsers, and matched each number in this guide to a quoted line from its source (the mtgo.com event pages, Scryfall, and Wizards of the Coast's rules and format pages). The community comments and the video description were read on the original pages. The deck label is BaseMTG's own classification, so another tracker may group the same lists differently.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Orzhov lifegain deck in Standard? It is a white-black Standard deck built around creatures and permanents that gain life, then pay it off with Amalia Benavides Aguirre, Ajani Resolute, Starscape Cleric and Lunar Convocation. BaseMTG classifies a list as Orzhov Life Gain when it plays only white and black spells; the label is a hand classification, not an official one.

How many Orzhov lifegain lists made the top 32? Thirteen of the 267 published top-32 decklists from nine Magic Online Standard events played October 1 to October 7, 2026, which is 4.9% of the sample. Seven of the 13 reached the top eight and one won, a 53.8% top-eight rate against 27.0% for all 267 lists.

What are the key cards in Orzhov lifegain? The engines are Hinterland Sanctifier, Liliana the Faultless, Case of the Uneaten Feast and Haliya, Guided by Light, which gain life when creatures enter. The payoffs are Amalia Benavides Aguirre, Ajani Resolute, Starscape Cleric, Lunar Convocation, Enlightened Confidant and Moseo, Vein's New Dean.

Does Orzhov lifegain use Reality Fracture cards? Yes. Ajani Resolute appears in 11 of the 13 lists, and Liliana the Faultless and Enlightened Confidant appear in 10 each, all first printed in Reality Fracture. Eleven lists run at least one, and the winning list plays three copies of each of the three.

What rotates from Orzhov lifegain in 2027? Seven nonbasic cards in the winning main deck leave under the stated rule: Amalia Benavides Aguirre, Case of the Uneaten Feast, Lunar Convocation, Starscape Cleric, Zoraline, Cosmos Caller, Deep-Cavern Bat and Concealed Courtyard. Each is printed in Standard only in a leaving set.

How does Amalia Benavides Aguirre work in the deck? Amalia is a 2/2 for {W}{B} with ward, pay 3 life. Each time you gain life it explores, which either puts a land in hand or adds a +1/+1 counter. It also destroys all other creatures if its power is exactly 20, a condition the lists in this sample are not built around.

Which sideboard cards do the Orzhov lists use? Decorum Dissertation, Seam Rip and Strategic Betrayal appear in 12 of the 13 lists, Duress and Enduring Innocence in 9, and Curious Farm Animals in 7. These are inclusion counts, and the lists give no data on which matchups the cards were boarded in.
