Rakdos Standard Deck Guide: Stingerquill Aggro (2026)

The Rakdos Standard deck built on the Stingerquill cards appeared in 12 of the 160 published top-32 lists from the first five Reality Fracture Standard events. It is a black-red shell of Lizard creatures, direct damage, and cards that pay off when an opponent loses life.
The best-placed list finished place 4 of 34 players on October 1. The core is Hired Claw, Master of Barbs, Fireglass Mentor, and the Stingerquill cards, backed by 23 lands and a sideboard of discard and creature removal.
TL;DR: The published results contain 12 Rakdos Stingerquill lists among 160 top-32 decklists, a 7.5% share of that sample. Three reached the top 8, and none finished first. The win route is repeated opponent life loss from attacking Lizards and landfall, followed by noncombat-damage triggers, larger attacks, and direct damage from Burst Lightning or Stingerquill Charm.
Rakdos Standard deck: What It Is in Standard (quick answer)
Rakdos Stingerquill is a black-red Standard aggro deck classified by lists that play at least one of Hired Claw, Master of Barbs, or Ingris Stingerquill. Early Lizard attacks switch on the "an opponent lost life this turn" conditions, and the deck turns those into cards, mana, counters, and more damage. The label is a hand classification, not an official event name.

Overview: Rakdos Standard deck After Reality Fracture
Five Magic Online Standard events from October 1 to October 5, 2026 supply the sample: Standard Challenge 16 on October 1, Standard Challenge 32 twice on October 2, Standard Challenge 16 on October 4, and Standard Challenge 32 Special on October 5. The pages publish 160 top-32 lists from 224 player entries.
BaseMTG hand-classified black-red lists with at least one of Hired Claw, Master of Barbs, or Ingris Stingerquill as Rakdos Stingerquill. The 12-list total is a hand classification and top-32-only sample: 7.5% of the 160 published lists, not the full field and not a win rate.
The 12 finishes, by event (handle and place):
- October 1 (34 players): VENOM01, 4th.
- October 2, first event (45 players): PEDRASTONE 6th, SLASHER21 14th, VENOM01 26th, MISTERTWIN 30th, SORRYIMSOTILTED 32nd.

Why Rakdos Standard deck Works
The shell links life loss, noncombat damage, and flexible damage spells into one sequence.

Life loss unlocks cards and mana
Whenever one or more Lizards attack, Hired Claw deals 1 damage to the target opponent. After an opponent has lost life, its {1}{R} ability can put a +1/+1 counter on it, with one activation each turn. Fireglass Mentor checks the same condition at the beginning of the second main phase, then exiles the top two cards of the library and permits one chosen card to be played until end of turn.
Flamecache Gecko uses the condition on entry: if an opponent lost life this turn, the Gecko adds {B}{R}. Its other ability costs {1}{R} and a discarded card to draw a card, giving the card a separate exchange after the conditional mana trigger.
Noncombat damage adds pressure to the board
Master of Barbs watches for noncombat damage. Whenever one or more opponents are dealt that damage, creatures under the controller's control get +1/+0 until end of turn. Hired Claw, Iridescent Vinelasher's landfall ability, Gev, Burst Lightning

Ingris Stingerquill has flying, and whenever a creature under the controller's control attacks, that creature deals 1 damage to each opponent. Valley Flamecaller makes a Lizard, Mouse, Otter, or Raccoon deal one extra damage to a permanent or player. Gev makes other creatures enter with an additional +1/+1 counter for each opponent who lost life this turn, and casting a Lizard makes Gev deal 1 damage to a target opponent.
Instants and lands finish the sequence
Burst Lightning deals 2 damage to any target for {R}, or 4 when kicked for an additional {4}. Stingerquill Charm costs {B}{R} and can deal 3 damage, give a creature first strike and deathtouch, or create a 2/2 Cadet token with haste until end of turn.
Rockface Village adds {R} only for a creature spell, or gives a qualifying creature +1/+0 and haste at sorcery speed. Ingris Stingerquill can create a 2/2 Cadet for {4}, then give creatures haste until end of turn. Cavern of Souls names a creature type and makes a matching creature spell unable to be countered, while Starting Town provides early untapped access and life-paid fixing.
Step-by-Step: How to Play Rakdos Standard deck
1. Start with a life-loss trigger. Attack with a Lizard when Hired Claw can deal 1 damage to the target opponent, or use Iridescent Vinelasher's landfall ability when a land enters. This makes "an opponent lost life this turn" active for the rest of the turn.
2. Use the second main phase for value. Fireglass Mentor checks the turn at the beginning of the second main phase, so combat can come before its top-two-card ability. Flamecache Gecko adds {B}{R} on entry after life loss, while its other ability draws a card for {1}{R} and a discard.
3. Add counters before the next attack. Hired Claw can receive a +1/+1 counter for {1}{R} after an opponent lost life, with one activation each turn. Gev, Scaled Scorch adds counters to other creatures entering later in the turn based on opponents who lost life.
4. Turn noncombat damage into power. Cast a Lizard while Gev is on the battlefield to make Gev deal 1 damage to a target opponent, or use another noncombat source. Master of Barbs then gives creatures +1/+0 until end of turn; Valley Flamecaller adds 1 to qualifying creature damage.
5. Spend the last mana on reach or protection. Burst Lightning deals 2 damage, or 4 when kicked for an additional {4}. Stingerquill Charm can deal 3, grant first strike and deathtouch, or create a hasty Cadet, so select the mode that matches the target or combat.

What Rotates Out in 2027
Alongside the early 2027 Standard rotation, six sets leave: Wilds of Eldraine, The Lost Caverns of Ixalan, Murders at Karlov Manor, Outlaws of Thunder Junction with The Big Score, Bloomburrow, and Duskmourn: House of Horror.
| Card | Printed in Standard only in |
|---|---|
| Fireglass Mentor | Bloomburrow |
| Flamecache Gecko | Bloomburrow |
| Gev, Scaled Scorch | Bloomburrow |
| Hired Claw | Bloomburrow |
| Iridescent Vinelasher | Bloomburrow |
| Valley Flamecaller | Bloomburrow |
| Blazemire Verge | Duskmourn: House of Horror |
| Cavern of Souls | The Lost Caverns of Ixalan |
| Rockface Village | Bloomburrow |
| Bitter Triumph | The Lost Caverns of Ixalan |
| Laughing Jasper Flint | Outlaws of Thunder Junction |
| Thought-Stalker Warlock | Bloomburrow |
The table counts a card as leaving only when all of its Standard-set printings are in a leaving set; bonus-sheet and promo printings were not checked. In the exact list above, those entries total 30 of 60 main-deck cards, plus three sideboard cards (Bitter Triumph, Laughing Jasper Flint, Thought-Stalker Warlock), removing the listed Lizard curve, several damage effects, and part of the mana base while the other 14 Standard sets stay. Nauctis: The Sunken Realm arrives alongside that rotation, with an Arena date of February 2, 2027 and a release date of February 5, 2027; no paper release day has been published.
GODEEPER: The rotation removes specific cards from this list and leaves the replacement question open for the next Standard card pool. MTG Standard Rotation 2027: Which 6 Sets Leave and When →
Tips for Piloting Rakdos Standard deck
- Attack with Lizards before activating Hired Claw's counter ability when the attack trigger can make an opponent lose life. The activation costs {1}{R} and works once each turn.
- Check the phase before relying on Fireglass Mentor. The ability occurs at the beginning of the second main phase and exiles two cards before one can be played until end of turn.
- Keep Flamecache Gecko's entry trigger separate from its other ability. The first requires opponent life loss this turn; the second costs {1}{R} and a discarded card to draw.
- Count the life-loss event before a creature enters beside Gev, Scaled Scorch. Other creatures enter with an additional +1/+1 counter for each opponent who lost life this turn.
- Valley Flamecaller applies to Lizard, Mouse, Otter, and Raccoon damage to permanents or players. Ingris Stingerquill adds 1 damage to each opponent whenever a creature attacks.
- Track land restrictions. Rockface Village's red mana is only for creature spells, its pump ability is sorcery speed, and Cavern of Souls makes matching creature spells unable to be countered.
Frequently Asked Questions
