Doomsday Excruciator, Restless Reef and Superior Spider-Man fanned out, the three cards at the center of the deck's plan

Dimir Excruciator is a blue-black combo-control deck built around one unusually severe library effect. Doomsday Excruciator leaves each player with six cards, then Restless Reef and a prepared Ancestral Recall can turn that reduced library into the win.

The deck won Pro Tour Lorwyn Eclipsed earlier in 2026, and Wizards still lists it as a Standard contender. Its more important date is ahead: Doomsday Excruciator and Restless Reef are both on the list of cards leaving Standard in early 2027.

TL;DR: Dimir Excruciator uses discard, removal, card selection, and Superior Spider-Man to set up Doomsday Excruciator. When the Demon is cast, each player exiles all but the bottom six cards of their library face down. Restless Reef mills four when it attacks, while Emeritus of Ideation's prepared Ancestral Recall can target the opponent and draw three cards. Wizards ranked the archetype eighth at 2.9% of the winner's metagame in data from August 18 through August 31, 2026.

What Is Dimir Excruciator in Standard? (quick answer)

Dimir Excruciator is a blue-black Standard combo-control deck that uses disruption and selection to resolve Doomsday Excruciator. The Demon reduces both libraries to their bottom six cards when it is cast. Restless Reef's attack trigger and Emeritus of Ideation's prepared Ancestral Recall provide the deck's two listed ways to finish the reduced-library game.

Key Takeaways

  • Wizards ranked Dimir Excruciator eighth at 2.9% of the winner's metagame after analyzing over 400 successful decks from August 18 through August 31, 2026.
  • That published data predates Reality Fracture, which releases on October 2, 2026. No Reality Fracture-era result data is used here.
  • Doomsday Excruciator's cast trigger exiles all but the bottom six cards of each player's library face down.
  • Restless Reef can become a 4/4 blue and black Shark with deathtouch, then mills a target player for four when it attacks.
  • Emeritus of Ideation enters prepared and carries Ancestral Recall, a prepared spell that lets a target player draw three cards.
  • Early 2027 rotation removes both the namesake Demon and Restless Reef, along with other listed main-deck and sideboard cards.

Overview: What Is Dimir Excruciator in Standard?

Wizards' Metagame Mentor analyzed over 400 successful decks from Magic Online Standard Challenges and Regional Championship Qualifier lists dated August 18 to August 31, 2026. It ranked archetypes by winner's metagame share, a measure combining popularity with net match wins. Dimir Excruciator placed eighth at 2.9% of that share.

Those figures predate Reality Fracture, released on October 2, 2026. Wizards has published no Reality Fracture-era results for this deck, so these figures say nothing about how that release changed the archetype.

Dimir Excruciator shares blue and black with Dimir Midrange, but the decks use those colors for different jobs. Dimir Midrange is a creature-and-planeswalker deck, while this aggregate list uses creatures such as Superior Spider-Man and Deceit around a library-reduction plan. The Dimir Midrange guide covers that separate shell, which shares only the colors with Dimir Excruciator.

Why Dimir Excruciator Works

Every piece in the list serves one sequence: shrink both libraries, then finish before the opponent can recover.

Doomsday Excruciator creates the six-card state

Doomsday Excruciator costs {B}{B}{B}{B}{B}{B}, has flying, and has a cast-dependent enters-the-battlefield ability. If it was cast, each player exiles all but the bottom six cards of their library face down.

Restless Reef is the land that turns that state into pressure. It enters tapped, taps for blue or black, and costs {2}{U}{B} to become a 4/4 blue and black Shark with deathtouch until end of turn. It remains a land, and whenever it attacks, its trigger makes a target player mill four cards. Wizards describes one Reef attack as usually enough to put the opponent on a draw from an empty library after Doomsday has done its work.

Superior Spider-Man preserves creature-based setup

Superior Spider-Man costs {2}{U}{B} and has Mind Swap. You may have it enter as a copy of any creature card in a graveyard, except its name is Superior Spider-Man and it is a 4/4 Spider Human Hero in addition to its other types. When you do, it exiles that card.

Mind Swap gives the deck a graveyard-based way to reuse a relevant creature's text while changing the copied permanent's name and types. Wizards calls Superior Spider-Man crucial to preserving the cast triggers from Deceit and Doomsday Excruciator.

Deceit is one of those creatures. It costs {4}{U/B}{U/B}, or it can be cast for its evoke cost of {U/B}{U/B}. If {U}{U} was spent to cast it, its enters ability returns up to one other target nonland permanent to its owner's hand. If {B}{B} was spent, the target opponent reveals their hand and you choose a nonland card for that player to discard.

Selection and prepared spells keep the route moving

fdn-606fdn-606 card artfdn-606Shop on TCGplayer Duress costs {B} and makes the opponent reveal their hand, then lets you choose a noncreature, nonland card for them to discard. Requiting Hex costs {B} and destroys a creature with mana value 2 or less. Its optional blight 1 cost puts a -1/-1 counter on a creature you control and, if paid, gains you 2 life. Bitter Triumph costs {1}{B}, asks you to discard a card or pay 3 life, and destroys a target creature or planeswalker.

Stock Up looks at the top five cards of your library, puts two into your hand, and puts the rest on the bottom in any order. Winternight Stories draws three cards, then makes you discard two unless you discard a creature card. From the graveyard, it has harmonize for {4}{U}, with a creature tap reducing that cost by the creature's power before the spell is exiled.

Emeritus of Ideation enters prepared and has flying and ward {2}. Whenever it attacks, you may exile eight cards from your graveyard; if you do, it becomes prepared. Its prepared spell, Ancestral Recall, costs {U} and says that a target player draws three cards. Targeting the opponent after the six-card state supplies the second finish Wizards identifies, while the creature's graveyard condition gives the card a clear place in the setup.

Doomsday Excruciator, Restless Reef and Superior Spider-Man card faces side by side on a dark background The combo core: the six-mana Demon, the land that mills, and the creature that copies from a graveyard.

Step-by-Step: How to Play Dimir Excruciator

Protect the cast trigger, keep the graveyard useful, and choose the finish only after the library state is ready.

1. Build the mana for both colors. Start by checking whether the opening lands can support the early black spells and the later blue-black costs. Gloomlake Verge adds blue or black only if you control an Island or Swamp, Restless Reef enters tapped, and Watery Grave can enter untapped only if you pay 2 life.

2. Strip the card that stops the setup. Duress reveals the opponent's hand and removes a noncreature, nonland card. Deceit can also remove a nonland card when {B}{B} was spent, while Strategic Betrayal exiles a creature the opponent controls and their graveyard.

3. Shape the library and graveyard. Stock Up keeps two of the top five cards and places the rest on the bottom in an order you choose. Winternight Stories gives three cards and asks for two discards unless one is a creature, which can matter when Superior Spider-Man needs a creature card in a graveyard to copy.

4. Cast Doomsday Excruciator. The Demon requires six black mana, and its key ability happens when it was cast. Its enters trigger makes each player exile all but the bottom six cards of their library face down, but only if the Demon was cast. Putting it onto the battlefield some other way does not create the six-card state.

5. Choose the finishing line. Activate Restless Reef for {2}{U}{B}, attack, and let its attack trigger mill the target player for four. If Emeritus of Ideation is prepared, its {U} Ancestral Recall can instead target a player and draw three cards, providing the alternate route described by Wizards.

The direct loss is the deck's listed six-card setup and its Restless Reef mill attack, plus several lands, removal spells, and sideboard options. Cards not in the table retain their listed functions: Superior Spider-Man can copy a creature card in a graveyard, Deceit still has its conditional bounce and discard modes, and Emeritus of Ideation still has Ancestral Recall. This list says nothing about replacements or how the deck performs after rotation.

Tips for Piloting Dimir Excruciator

  • Check conditional lands before counting colored mana. Gloomlake Verge needs an Island or Swamp you control for its blue and black abilities. Hidden Lair adds color only if it entered that turn or you control a basic land, while Undercity Sewers enters tapped and surveils 1.

  • Use Duress for the cards it can actually take. It cannot choose a creature or land. Deceit's black ETB mode also chooses a nonland card, while its blue ETB mode returns a nonland permanent, so identify the type before committing to either line.

  • Treat life and cards as explicit costs. Requiting Hex's blight 1 is optional and gains 2 life if paid. Bitter Triumph asks for a discard or 3 life, which can make a redundant card more useful than paying life when the graveyard and hand both matter.

  • Keep a creature in mind for Winternight Stories. The spell draws three, then lets you avoid discarding two by discarding a creature card. That choice can support Superior Spider-Man's Mind Swap, which needs a creature card in a graveyard and exiles the card it copies.

  • Pick the creature you copy with care. Superior Spider-Man can copy any creature card in a graveyard, but the copied card is exiled and Spider-Man keeps its own name while becoming a 4/4 Spider Human Hero in addition to other types.

  • Choose the target for each finish deliberately. Restless Reef's attack trigger targets a player and mills four. Ancestral Recall also targets a player, so Emeritus of Ideation's prepared spell can draw three for the opponent when that is the route that completes the reduced-library sequence.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Dimir Excruciator in Standard? Dimir Excruciator is a blue-black combo-control deck built around Doomsday Excruciator. When cast, it makes each player exile all but the bottom six cards of their library face down. Discard, removal, card selection, and Superior Spider-Man support that setup, while Restless Reef supplies the main attack-based finish.

How does Dimir Excruciator win? It usually wins by combining Doomsday Excruciator with Restless Reef. After the Demon reduces each library to six cards, Restless Reef can become a 4/4 blue and black Shark with deathtouch, attack, and mill the target player for four. Emeritus of Ideation offers another route through its prepared Ancestral Recall spell, which draws three for a target player.

What are the key cards in Dimir Excruciator? The key pieces are Doomsday Excruciator, Restless Reef, Superior Spider-Man, Deceit, and Emeritus of Ideation. Doomsday creates the six-card state. Restless Reef mills four when it attacks. Superior Spider-Man copies a creature card in a graveyard and exiles it. Deceit provides conditional bounce or hand discard, while Emeritus carries Ancestral Recall.

Which Dimir Excruciator cards rotate in 2027? Ten of the listed cards leave in early 2027. The main deck loses Gloomlake Verge, Restless Reef, Doomsday Excruciator, Bitter Triumph, Undercity Sewers, Deadly Cover-Up, and Cavern of Souls. The sideboard loses Preacher of the Schism, Malcolm, Alluring Scoundrel, and Disdainful Stroke.

What should an opening hand do? Keep an opening hand by checking its mana, early interaction, and route toward the six-mana spell. Gloomlake Verge needs an Island or Swamp you control before its colored abilities work, Restless Reef enters tapped, and Watery Grave can cost 2 life to enter untapped. Stock Up can then look at five and keep two.

How should I use the sideboard? The sideboard supplies additional interaction and threats, not a published matchup chart. Preacher of the Schism, Malcolm, Alluring Scoundrel, and Quantum Riddler add creatures; Flashfreeze and Disdainful Stroke counter specified spell types. Strategic Betrayal, Deadly Cover-Up, M.O.D.O.K., Emeritus of Ideation, Bitter Triumph, and Day of Black Sun add tools described by their texts.

How popular is Dimir Excruciator? Wizards ranked Dimir Excruciator eighth at 2.9% of the winner's metagame in its September 2026 RCQ analysis. The source combined more than 400 successful decks from Magic Online Standard Challenges and RCQ lists from August 18 through August 31. Those figures measure winner's metagame share, not a current Reality Fracture-era result.
