Izzet Prowess Standard Deck Guide: Decklist and Matchups
The cheap blue-red deck is winning more than it loses, and it turned its October results around in the second half of the month. Dimir Midrange is still the wall.
Verdict
Play Izzet Prowess in best-of-three if you like fast games: it's 123-118 in real matches since Reality Fracture with three Challenge wins in October. Copy _IlNano_'s list, expect Dimir Midrange to beat you, and don't buy in for 2027: a third of the 60 rotates.

Izzet Prowess is worth playing in Standard right now if you like short, sharp games and best-of-three. It's the low-curve blue-red deck: a dozen cheap creatures that grow every time you cast a spell, and nearly twenty one-mana spells to make that happen. Since Reality Fracture arrived it has won slightly more real matches than it has lost, it took three Magic Online Standard Challenges in October, and it got better as the month went on. The list to copy is _IlNano_'s, who has finished third with the same 75 twice in a week.
Izzet Prowess decklist: _IlNano_'s October 18 list
_IlNano_ went 6-2 and finished third of 50 in the Standard Challenge 16 on October 18 (mtgo.com event page), with the same 75 that took third on October 14. The two losses were to Orzhov Lifegain in the Swiss and to Strongmind's Dimir Midrange in the semifinal (tournament path on mtgpile). He also won the October 2 Challenge with an earlier version of the deck. The Copy list button under the tables gives you the 75 in Arena and MTGO import format.
Main deck, 60 cards
| Qty | Card | Why it's here |
|---|---|---|
| 4 | Slickshot Show-Off | Two-mana 1/2 flier with haste that gets +2/+0 for each noncreature spell. You can plot it on turn two and cast it free later with mana up for spells. |
| 4 | Pompous Battlemage | One-mana prowess creature that enters prepared, so it's also a spare one-mana spell: cast a copy of Improvised Act to discard and draw. |
| 4 | Elusive Otter | One-mana prowess creature that can't be blocked by anything with less power. The Adventure half needs green, so here it's just the creature. |
| 3 | Hearth Elemental | A 4/5 that costs one less for each instant, sorcery or Adventure card in your graveyard. Its Adventure refills an empty hand: discard it, draw two. |
| 1 | Eddymurk Crab | Seven-mana 5/5 with flash that gets cheaper with each instant and sorcery in your graveyard and taps two blockers. |
| 4 | Burst Lightning | Two damage for one mana, four late. |
| 4 | Opt | Cantrip that triggers prowess on either player's turn. |
| 4 | Sleight of Hand | Sorcery-speed cantrip: sees two cards, keeps the better one. |
| 4 | Flow State | Look at three, keep one. With an instant and a sorcery already in your graveyard, keep two. |
| 2 | Bounce Off | One-mana bounce for a blocker or a creature someone just paid a lot for. |
| 2 | Secret Identity | One mana: make your creature a 1/1 with hexproof to dodge removal, or a 3/4 flier for the attack. |
| 2 | Wild Ride | +3/+0 and haste for one mana, and it can be cast again from the graveyard. |
| 1 | Impractical Joke | Three damage to a creature or planeswalker for one mana. |
| 1 | Vibrant Outburst | Three damage to any target and taps a creature: removal and a way past a blocker. |
| 4 | Steam Vents | |
| 4 | Spirebluff Canal | Untapped on turns one to three. |
| 4 | Riverpyre Verge | Red always, blue once you control an Island or a Mountain. Steam Vents counts as both. |
| 4 | Island | |
| 2 | Great Hall of the Biblioplex | Any colour for instants and sorceries, and a 2/4 creature for five mana when the game goes long. |
| 1 | Mountain | |
| 1 | Multiversal Passage | Enters as whichever basic you're missing. |
Sideboard, 15 cards
| Qty | Card | Zone | Bring it in against |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 | Spell Pierce | Sideboard | Control decks and their planeswalkers. |
| 2 | Spell Snare | Sideboard | Any deck whose best cards cost two. |
| 1 | Disdainful Stroke | Sideboard | Four-drops and up: Dragons, control finishers, Sunderflock. |
| 2 | Soul-Guide Lantern | Sideboard | Graveyard decks, Dimir Reanimator first. |
| 1 | Torpor Orb | Sideboard | Decks built on enter-the-battlefield triggers: Jund Sacrifice, Orzhov Lifegain. |
| 2 | Fire Magic | Sideboard | Boards of 1/1s and 2/2s. It hits your own creatures too. |
| 1 | Broadside Barrage | Sideboard | One big creature: five damage, then loot. |
| 2 | Colorstorm Stallion | Sideboard | Removal-heavy decks: a hasty 3/3 with ward that grows with every spell. |
| 2 | Ral, Crackling Wit | Sideboard | Slow decks that can't pressure a planeswalker. |
75 cards (60 main, 15 sideboard), Buy opens TCGplayer Mass Entry (affiliate link); Copy gives a text list for Arena, MTGO or Moxfield.
The deck runs only 20 lands with 40 spells. That works because 19 of the 24 noncreature spells cost one mana, and apart from Hearth Elemental and Crab, which get cheaper as the game goes on, nothing costs more than two.
The stock version differs in a few slots. The lists that sit closest to the October median run two Eddymurk Crab and no Hearth Elemental, two Impractical Joke, a Starting Town and a Spell Snare in the main, with no Great Hall. _IlNano_'s changes point the deck at a long game, so it can refill its hand after the first wave of threats dies. We'd copy his.
How Izzet Prowess wins
Every creature in the deck grows when you cast a noncreature spell, and almost every spell costs one mana. A normal good start is a one-drop on turn one, Slickshot on turn two, then two or three cheap spells a turn while the creatures swing. Slickshot is the damage: it flies, it has haste, and each spell adds two power. A turn with Wild Ride plus a cantrip turns a 1/2 into an 8/2 flier.

The cantrips matter as much as the creatures. Opt, Sleight of Hand and Flow State trigger prowess and dig for the next threat or the burn spell you need, and they fill the graveyard for Flow State's two-card mode and for Hearth Elemental. Reality Fracture's
fra-90
fra-90Shop on TCGplayer Pompous Battlemage fixed an old weakness: draws with only creatures or only spells. It's both, a prowess creature that carries its own one-mana spell.
Secret Identity is the deck's only protection, and lists disagree on the count. Two copies keep Slickshot alive through one removal spell; more would leave dead cards in hands without a creature. _IlNano_ runs two, and so does the median list.
Two builds of Izzet Prowess and how they did
We sorted every Standard Challenge decklist mtgo.com published from October 1 to 21 (25 Challenges) with the same rules as our meta updates. Izzet Prowess here means the lists mtgpile files under that name, the deck whose match record we quote below: blue-red with Elusive Otter and Pompous Battlemage, ten of them with Callous Sell-Sword. The Sunderflock decks are covered in our Izzet Spellementals guide, and the Slickshot burn lists without Otter, which mtgpile calls Wizard Burn, aren't counted here.
| Period | Izzet Prowess lists | Top 8s | Challenge wins | Field top-8 rate |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Oct 1 to 12 | 31 | 5 | 2 | about 27% |
| Oct 13 to 21 | 16 | 6 | 1 | about 26% |
| Oct 1 to 21 | 47 (36 players) | 11 | 3 | about 26% |
The early numbers were poor: plenty of players, few top 8s. From October 13 fewer players registered it and more of them reached the top 8, mami's 9-0 Challenge win on October 13 included. That's a small sample, but it points the same way as the match record.
Two builds share the shell. The Flow State build, _IlNano_'s, was 37 of the 47 lists with nine top 8s and all three wins (_IlNano_ on October 2, Capitano_CL on October 7, mami on October 13). The other ten swap Flow State and Burst Lightning for four Ancestral Anger, Full Bore and Callous Sell-Sword, cast mostly for its one-mana red Adventure. MacIsaac played four of them and took it to the top 8 twice, including third place on October 16. It's a more all-in deck; we'd start with Flow State.
Izzet Prowess matchups and sideboarding
mtgpile's win matrix counts real Magic Online matches between identified decks since Reality Fracture went live on September 29. We only list opponents with at least ten recorded matches against Izzet Prowess:
Image: BaseMTG chart from mtgpile's Standard win matrix, snapshot of October 22, 2026, opponents with 10 or more matches.
| Opponent | Real record | What we'd bring in |
|---|---|---|
| Mono-Green Landfall | 13-9 | Broadside Barrage, Spell Snare |
| Jund Sacrifice | 10-10 | Torpor Orb, Soul-Guide Lantern |
| Dimir Midrange | 5-14 | Fire Magic, Colorstorm Stallion |
| Boros Dragons | 9-10 | Disdainful Stroke, Broadside Barrage |
| Izzet Spellementals | 8-10 | Disdainful Stroke, Soul-Guide Lantern, Spell Pierce |
| Orzhov Lifegain | 7-10 | Fire Magic, Torpor Orb |
| Dimir Reanimator | 7-7 | Soul-Guide Lantern, Spell Pierce |
| Azorius Control | 10-4 | Spell Pierce, Disdainful Stroke, Ral |
| Jeskai Artifacts | 7-6 | Spell Pierce, Broadside Barrage |
| 4c Control | 7-3 | Spell Pierce, Disdainful Stroke, Ral |
| Rakdos Lizards | 2-8 | Fire Magic, Spell Snare, Colorstorm Stallion |
Dimir Midrange is the one to fear. It's the worst record of the matchups you'll see often, and _IlNano_ lost to it in the October 18 semifinal. Dimir's cheap fliers block Slickshot, its flash creatures trade on your turn, and Kaito wins long games. Fire Magic for one mana clears its 1/1s. Colorstorm Stallion has haste and ward, so it hits before sorcery-speed answers and taxes the instant ones. The Dimir Midrange guide has its side of the matchup.
Control decks are the good news. Azorius Control and 4c Control are slow to start, and a hasty flier backed by Spell Pierce punishes that. Ral comes in because those decks rarely attack a planeswalker.
Orzhov Lifegain and Rakdos Lizards race you. Orzhov's life gain comes from creatures entering, which is what Torpor Orb stops; see our Orzhov Lifegain guide. Rakdos Lizards' cheap creatures and burn come in under you, so you need Fire Magic and Spell Snare. Our Rakdos guide says the Lizards are good against Izzet Prowess, and the numbers agree.
The Spellementals matchup is close to even and an odd one to play, since both decks run the same cantrips and lands. Disdainful Stroke counters Sunderflock and Lantern exiles the graveyard that makes Crab and Hearth Elemental cheap.
GODEEPER: Where Izzet Prowess sits among every Standard deck after Reality Fracture. Standard meta after Reality Fracture →
Rotation: a third of the deck leaves in early 2027
Standard drops its oldest sets in early 2027, at the Nauctis: The Sunken Realm Prerelease. Outlaws of Thunder Junction, Wilds of Eldraine and Bloomburrow all go, and so do the deck's best creatures:
| Card | Copies in _IlNano_'s main | Only Standard printing |
|---|---|---|
| Slickshot Show-Off | 4 | Outlaws of Thunder Junction |
| Elusive Otter | 4 | Wilds of Eldraine |
| Sleight of Hand | 4 | Wilds of Eldraine |
| Spirebluff Canal | 4 | Outlaws of Thunder Junction |
| Hearth Elemental | 3 | Wilds of Eldraine |
| Eddymurk Crab | 1 | Bloomburrow |
That's 20 of the 60, plus Ral, Torpor Orb and Disdainful Stroke from the sideboard. Pompous Battlemage, Flow State, the one-mana burn and Steam Vents stay, so a blue-red spells deck will survive, just not this build of it. The 2027 rotation guide has the full set list.
Who should play Izzet Prowess
Play it if you enjoy short games full of decisions: when to plot Slickshot, which cantrip to hold for the opponent's turn, whether to spend Secret Identity now or keep it. It rewards players who count damage well. It's not an expensive deck either: on October 22, mtgpile put the average list at about $220 over the previous 30 days.
Skip it if your local Standard is full of Dimir Midrange, or if you play best-of-one on Arena, where you can't bring in Fire Magic or Spell Pierce. And if you want cards that last, buy elsewhere: the creatures rotate in a few months.
What players are saying
The best paper report we found is from r/Spikes. u/ShooLow took Izzet Prowess to a 23-player RCQ on October 18, went 3-2 in the Swiss and made the top 8. He beat Jund Sacrifice once with a 13-damage attack from Slickshot and Pompous Battlemage, Spell Snared a Stinging Vitriol in game three against Rakdos Lizards, and lost twice to Azorius Momo, a matchup he said "seems like hell to me". Asked about Secret Identity, he explained why he plays few copies: "It´s a reactive card in a deck that wants to be proactive."
On Pompous Battlemage, another player in the same thread put it well: it "partially solves the 'drew the wrong third of my deck' problem". That's our read of the card too.
StickyWicket's October 17 video plays the deck on Arena against Dimir Midrange and Dimir Reanimator:
Our take
We'd play Izzet Prowess in a best-of-three event this month, and we'd play _IlNano_'s list card for card. It's a fair deck with a winning record, it's beating the control decks, and it got better as October went on. We wouldn't bring it into a room full of Dimir Midrange, and we wouldn't buy Slickshots to keep. If you already own the playset, this is a good month to use it. If you want a blue-red deck that lasts past February, keep an eye on what Pompous Battlemage and Flow State do without Slickshot.
How we checked this: the decklist and round results come from the mtgo.com page of the October 18 Challenge 16 and _IlNano_'s mtgpile page; list counts use every Standard Challenge decklist mtgo.com published from October 1 to 21, read on October 22; match records are mtgpile's win matrix that day; card text and printings come from Scryfall. The scripts and data are kept with our sources.
