Dimir Reanimator Standard Deck Guide: List and Matchups
The blue-black graveyard deck beats Dimir Midrange and struggles against the fast creature decks. Here's the list, the copy lines that make it work, and what to board.
Verdict
Play Dimir Reanimator if your Standard room is full of Dimir Midrange and control: as of October 22 it's 115-112 overall since Reality Fracture and well ahead of Dimir Midrange. Skip it if you expect Orzhov Lifegain or Mono-Green Landfall, and know that it's expensive and loses most of its mana in 2027.

Dimir Reanimator is the blue-black Standard deck that puts big creatures in its own graveyard and then casts Superior Spider-Man as a copy of the best one. It plays like a control deck most of the time, with removal, discard and The Theorist drawing extra cards, until a four-mana Spider-Man enters as a copy of Deceit or Uldaros Theorix, enter trigger included. As of October 22 it has an even record against the whole field since Reality Fracture, a clearly winning one against Dimir Midrange, and bad ones against the two fastest creature decks. Two players won Magic Online Challenges with it in October.
Dimir Reanimator decklist: yunyu1234's October 21 list
yunyu1234 went 6-2 and finished fourth of 36 in the Standard Challenge 16 on October 21 (mtgo.com event page), a day after going 5-0 in a Standard League with the same main deck. The two losses were to pepeteam in a Dimir Reanimator mirror in the Swiss and to Regien's Boros Dragons in the semifinal (tournament path on mtgpile). We picked this list because it's one of the two closest to the average Dimir Reanimator Challenge list from October. The Copy list button under the tables gives you the 75 for Arena or MTGO.
Main deck, 60 cards
| Qty | Card | Why it's here |
|---|---|---|
| 4 | Kavaero, Mind-Bitten | Superior Spider-Man's Magic Online name, so the Copy list imports. Four mana. Enters as a copy of any creature card in a graveyard, as a 4/4, and exiles that card. Since you cast it, the copy's "if you cast" triggers work. |
| 4 | Deceit | Evoke it for two to bounce a permanent or take a card from the opponent's hand, and it goes to the graveyard for Spider-Man to copy. |
| 4 | Seasoned Cryomancer | Three-mana 2/2: draw two, discard two, and tap and stun a creature for each nonland card you discarded. It puts Uldaros in the graveyard. |
| 2 | Uldaros Theorix | Six-mana 5/5 flier. Cast, it copies one card of each type from your graveyard and casts up to six mana value of them free. |
| 2 | Overlord of the Balemurk | Two mana as an enchantment that mills four and returns a creature to your hand, or five mana as a 5/5 that does it again on every attack. |
| 1 | Emeritus of Ideation | Five-mana 5/5 flier with ward that enters prepared with a copy of Ancestral Recall. |
| 2 | The Theorist, Jace Beleren | Four-mana planeswalker that draws you a card on each of the opponent's draw steps. |
| 3 | Requiting Hex | One-mana kill spell for cheap creatures. |
| 3 | Bitter Triumph | Two-mana kill spell for a creature or planeswalker. Paying the cost with a discard fills the graveyard. |
| 3 | Theorix Charm | Two-mana instant: soft counter for a noncreature spell, -2/-2, or mill three and draw. |
| 3 | Duress | Takes a noncreature spell before it matters. |
| 2 | Winternight Stories | Draw three, discard two (or one creature card). Another way to bin Uldaros. |
| 1 | Strategic Betrayal | Exiles a creature and the opponent's whole graveyard. |
| 1 | Deadly Cover-Up | Five-mana sweeper for when you fall behind on board. |
| 4 | Watery Grave | |
| 4 | Gloomlake Verge | Blue always, black once you control an Island or a Swamp. |
| 4 | Shipwreck Marsh | Untapped once you have two other lands. |
| 4 | Restless Reef | Becomes a 4/4 deathtouch Shark and mills four when it attacks. |
| 2 | Undercity Sewers | Enters tapped, surveils one. |
| 2 | Cavern of Souls | Name Spider or Elemental and Spider-Man or Deceit can't be countered. |
| 2 | Multiversal Passage | Enters as whichever basic you need. |
| 3 | Swamp |
Sideboard, 15 cards
| Qty | Card | Zone | Bring it in against |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 | Day of Black Sun | Sideboard | Wide creature decks: Orzhov Lifegain, Mono-Green Landfall. |
| 2 | Flashfreeze | Sideboard | Red and green decks: Mono-Green Landfall, Izzet, Boros Dragons. |
| 1 | Qarsi Revenant | Sideboard | Aggro: a three-mana flier with deathtouch and lifelink. |
| 1 | M.O.D.O.K. | Sideboard | Decks full of 1/1s and 2/2s: it shrinks all of them. |
| 2 | Cruelclaw's Heist | Sideboard | Control and midrange: exile their best card from hand. |
| 1 | Duress | Sideboard | Control and Izzet spell decks. |
| 1 | Disdainful Stroke | Sideboard | Expensive threats: Dragons, control finishers. |
| 1 | Deadly Cover-Up | Sideboard | Creature decks, and decks that rely on one named card. |
| 1 | Strategic Betrayal | Sideboard | Graveyard decks and single big threats. |
| 1 | Emeritus of Ideation | Sideboard | Slow matchups where another big flier wins. |
| 2 | Doomsday Excruciator | Sideboard | Control decks: the backup kill, explained below. |

How Dimir Reanimator wins
The deck has three ways to get a strong creature into play for four mana, all through Superior Spider-Man.
Image: card faces via Scryfall, © Wizards of the Coast. Seasoned Cryomancer, Winternight Stories, Overlord of the Balemurk and The Theorist, Jace Beleren.
Spider-Man as Deceit. Evoke
ecl-212
ecl-212Shop on TCGplayer Deceit on turn two, bounce a blocker or take their best card, and it goes to the graveyard. On turn four, Spider-Man enters as a copy of it. Deceit's triggers check whether {U}{U} or {B}{B} was spent, and Spider-Man costs {2}{U}{B}: pay the generic part with one blue and one black and both triggers happen. You get a 4/4, a bounce and a discard for four mana.
Spider-Man as Uldaros Theorix. Uldaros costs six to cast, so you usually don't. Seasoned Cryomancer, Winternight Stories or Bitter Triumph's discard cost puts it in the graveyard, and Spider-Man copies it. Because Spider-Man was cast, the copy's "if you cast him" trigger works: exile one card of each type from your graveyard, copy them, and cast up to six mana value of the copies free. Bitter Triumph, Duress and a Seasoned Cryomancer fit, for example, on top of a 4/4 flier.
Overlord of the Balemurk. Cast for its impending cost of two, it mills four and returns a creature to your hand, which both fills the graveyard and finds Spider-Man.
Around that, Seasoned Cryomancer stuns attackers while it loots, Theorix Charm and Duress protect the big turn, and The Theorist buries slower decks in cards. The two Cavern of Souls name Spider or Elemental, so a counterspell can't stop the key turn.
Two winning lists and how Dimir Reanimator did in October
J4K3ST3R02 won the October 16 Challenge 32 with Dimir Reanimator, 8-1 in a field of 57, beating a Reanimator mirror in the quarterfinal, MacIsaac's Izzet Prowess in the semifinal and Azorius Momo in the final (mtgpile deck page). His 75 leans further into the big threats: three Overlord, three Uldaros and three Theorist, but one fewer Cryomancer and Duress, no main-deck Emeritus, and an Island in place of a Restless Reef. The same 75 card for card took fourth in the October 18 Challenge in fingers1991's hands. Either list is a fine start; we'd play yunyu's for the extra Duress and Cryomancer.
We sorted every Standard Challenge decklist mtgo.com published from October 1 to 21 with the same rules as our meta updates. Every Dimir Reanimator list in that period runs Superior Spider-Man, Deceit and Restless Reef.
| Period | Dimir Reanimator lists | Top 8s | Challenge wins | Field top-8 rate |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Oct 1 to 12 | 16 | 5 | 1 | about 27% |
| Oct 13 to 21 | 31 | 9 | 1 | about 26% |
| Oct 1 to 21 | 47 (34 players) | 14 | 2 | about 26% |
The deck nearly doubled its numbers in the second half of the month and kept making top 8s at a slightly better rate than the field. _IlNano_ won the October 11 Challenge with it, and J4K3ST3R02 won on October 16.
Dimir Reanimator matchups and sideboarding
mtgpile's win matrix counts real Magic Online matches between identified decks since Reality Fracture went live on September 29. Dimir Reanimator is 115-112 overall as of October 22. We only list opponents with at least ten recorded matches:
Image: BaseMTG chart from mtgpile's Standard win matrix, snapshot of October 22, 2026, opponents with 10 or more matches.
| Opponent | Real record | What we'd bring in |
|---|---|---|
| Dimir Midrange | 20-12 | Cruelclaw's Heist, Duress, Doomsday Excruciator |
| Orzhov Lifegain | 10-22 | Day of Black Sun, Qarsi Revenant, M.O.D.O.K. |
| Mono-Green Landfall | 10-20 | Flashfreeze, Day of Black Sun, Deadly Cover-Up |
| Izzet Spellementals | 9-3 | Flashfreeze, Duress, Strategic Betrayal |
| 4c Control | 8-7 | Cruelclaw's Heist, Disdainful Stroke, Doomsday Excruciator |
| Izzet Prowess | 7-7 | Flashfreeze, Qarsi Revenant, M.O.D.O.K. |
Dimir Midrange is the reason to play it. It's tied for the most common opponent in the table, and the record is clearly positive. Both decks trade removal for creatures, and Reanimator's creatures are bigger and come back. Deceit's discard and Cruelclaw's Heist take Midrange's best card before it lands. Our Dimir Midrange guide covers the matchup from the other side, which calls this deck blue-black control.
Orzhov Lifegain and Mono-Green Landfall are the problem. Both put several creatures out before your four-mana turn, and a single copied Deceit doesn't catch up. Day of Black Sun is the best card you have here: for X equal to two or three it kills most of their board. Flashfreeze counters every green spell Landfall casts. See our Orzhov Lifegain guide and Mono-Green Landfall guide for what they're trying to do.
The Izzet decks are fine. Izzet Spellementals is the best record of the lot, and Izzet Prowess is even. Flashfreeze counters their red spells and Qarsi Revenant blocks fliers and gains life.
Watch out for Doorkeeper Thrull. It has flash and stops creatures entering from triggering abilities, so flashed in with Spider-Man on the stack it leaves you with a 4/4 copy and no trigger. Bait it with an evoked Deceit first if you can.

The Doomsday Excruciator backup plan
Doomsday Excruciator is in 30 of the 47 sideboards, two copies in yunyu's. Superior Spider-Man copying it from the graveyard counts as cast, so the copy's trigger makes each player exile all but the bottom six cards of their library. With Restless Reef milling four on every attack, the opponent runs out of cards in a few turns. It's slow and it hurts you too, so it comes in only against control decks that can answer the normal threats.
Decks that play this as the main plan are a different archetype. Our Dimir Excruciator guide covers that one, and the green version that copies Bringer of the Last Gift is in the Sultai Reanimator guide.
Rotation: the mana leaves in 2027
Standard drops its six oldest sets with the first Prerelease of 2027, Nauctis: The Sunken Realm. Dimir Reanimator keeps its creatures, Spider-Man, Deceit, Uldaros, Cryomancer and The Theorist, but loses a lot of its lands:
| Card | Copies in yunyu's main | Only Standard printing |
|---|---|---|
| Gloomlake Verge | 4 | Duskmourn |
| Restless Reef | 4 | The Lost Caverns of Ixalan |
| Bitter Triumph | 3 | The Lost Caverns of Ixalan |
| Overlord of the Balemurk | 2 | Duskmourn |
| Undercity Sewers | 2 | Murders at Karlov Manor |
| Cavern of Souls | 2 | The Lost Caverns of Ixalan |
| Deadly Cover-Up | 1 | Murders at Karlov Manor |
That's 18 of the 60, twelve of them lands, plus Doomsday Excruciator, Cruelclaw's Heist, Deadly Cover-Up and Disdainful Stroke from the sideboard. Without Cavern of Souls, Spider-Man and Deceit can be countered again. See our 2027 rotation guide for the full set list.
Who should play Dimir Reanimator
Play it if you like long games with a few big turns, and if your local Standard leans toward Dimir Midrange, control and Izzet. It asks you to plan two turns ahead: what to discard to Cryomancer, when to evoke Deceit, which creature Spider-Man should copy.
Skip it if your room is full of Orzhov Lifegain or Mono-Green Landfall, or if you're on a budget. On October 22, mtgpile put the average list at about $430 over the previous 30 days, more than Izzet Prowess or Mardu Discard, and The Theorist and Cavern of Souls are a big part of that. Almost a third of the main deck rotates in a few months.
What players are saying
In an r/Spikes thread asking how to beat the deck, u/Lobster556 answered someone who doubted Uldaros: "Two 5 power fliers and often a Stock Up and a removal spell, all from one card." The same comment notes that "it seems like a plan B rather than the main win con" about Doomsday Excruciator, which is how yunyu's list uses it.
On how to beat it, one reply remembered a streamer flashing in "Doorkeeper Thrull in response to the Kav/SSM", Kavaero being Spider-Man's Magic Online name. And on Arena, u/Villag3Idiot expects rotation to hurt: "The deck will be much, much weaker once Caverns rotates out."
babyfrogs walked through a first-place Dimir Uldaros list on October 16:
Our take
Dimir Reanimator is a good deck in the right room. If your local event or your Arena ladder is mostly Dimir Midrange and control, it's one of the best choices in Standard right now, and yunyu's list is the one we'd copy. If it's mostly fast creature decks, play something else, because the sideboard can't fix those records. We wouldn't buy into it for 2027: the creatures stay, but a deck that loses twelve lands and Cavern of Souls will need rebuilding.
How we checked this: the decklists and round results come from the mtgo.com event pages and mtgpile deck pages for October 16 and 21; list counts use every Standard Challenge decklist mtgo.com published from October 1 to 21, read on October 22; match records are mtgpile's win matrix that day; card text and printings come from Scryfall.
