Reign of Dragons Precon Upgrades: Best Swaps for Lathliss

The box already has the Dragons. What holds it back is a dozen cards that don't care about them, and the fix is mostly more Dragons that pay you for casting Dragons.

Verdict

Keep Lathliss and the Dragons. Cut the cards that aren't Dragons or don't help cast them; the ten swaps cost about $83, and the five cheapest come to about $10.

Ganax, Astral Hunter, Lathliss, Dragon Queen and Terror of the Peaks side by side, the commander of the Reign of Dragons precon between two popular upgrades

The Reign of Dragons precon doesn't need a new plan. It already runs 18 Dragons besides Lathliss, Dragon Queen fdc-7fdc-7 card artfdc-7Shop on TCGplayer, and she turns every nontoken Dragon that enters into a second, 5/5 flying one. What holds it back is the dozen or so cards that don't care about Dragons at all. Swap those for Dragons that pay you back, plus two cost reducers, and the deck gets faster without changing what it does. The ten swaps below come from the 1,475 Lathliss decks built from this precon on EDHREC on October 23, 2026, priced at the cheapest nonfoil printing on Scryfall that day.

Reign of Dragons is the mono-red deck of the five Foundations Commander precons. It released on October 2, 2026, at an MSRP of $29.99, with a traditional foil borderless Lathliss, 32 Mountains, 67 other cards and ten double-sided tokens, most of them a Treasure on one side and a Dragon on the other.

What's in the Reign of Dragons precon

Lathliss costs {4}{R}{R} for a 6/6 flier, and her text is short: "Whenever another nontoken Dragon you control enters, create a 5/5 red Dragon creature token with flying." Her second ability, {1}{R}, gives every Dragon you control +1/+0 until end of turn.

The rest of the box is built around that:

Average mana value of the 62 nonland cards, Lathliss included, is 3.73. That's high, but it's a Dragon deck. None of the 100 cards is on the Game Changers list, and Wizards' Commander page says "bracket 1 and 2 decks exclude game changers," so the box fits a Bracket 2 table as printed. Our Commander brackets guide covers the other limits.

Why the Reign of Dragons precon needs fewer non-Dragons

Lathliss only counts nontoken Dragons. Every card that isn't one, and doesn't help you cast one, is a turn where your commander does nothing. EDHREC's ten most-cut cards are the ten cuts below, and only one of them, Taurean Mauler, is always a Dragon.

Goddric, Cloaked Reveler fdc-158fdc-158 card artfdc-158Shop on TCGplayer tops the cut list (77.9% of Lathliss decks). It's a Human Noble that's a Dragon only on turns when two or more nonland permanents have entered under your control, so most of the time it isn't a Dragon as it enters, and Lathliss only cares about Dragons entering. Tico MTG made the same point in his upgrade video: "we care about dragons entering, not things becoming dragons." Hit the Mother Lode fdc-161fdc-161 card artfdc-161Shop on TCGplayer (64.2%) is a seven-mana sorcery whose Treasures arrive tapped. The Elder Dragon War (63.3%) and Commander's Sphere fdc-250fdc-250 card artfdc-250Shop on TCGplayer (61.4%) are slow. Taurean Mauler fdc-178fdc-178 card artfdc-178Shop on TCGplayer is a changeling, so it does count as a Dragon for Lathliss, but a 2/2 for three is still the weakest Dragon you can play.

Cyan: share that added its replacement (The Fire Crystal and Desolation of Smaug are out of fewer decks, since they're newer than some lists). Data: EDHREC, October 23, 2026. Image: BaseMTG chart.

Step-by-Step: The Ten Reign of Dragons Precon Swaps

Percentages are EDHREC's figures for the Lathliss decks built from the precon, read on October 23, 2026. Prices are the cheapest nonfoil printing on Scryfall the same day.

1. Swap the part-time Dragons for Dragons that make mana. Goddric becomes Ganax, Astral Hunter (825 decks, 55.9%, $5.07), the most-added card on the page. Ganax is a five-mana Dragon, so Lathliss triggers off it, and "Whenever Ganax or another Dragon you control enters, create a Treasure token" counts her 5/5 tokens too. Taurean Mauler becomes Hellkite Tyrant (517 decks, 35.1%, $1.72), a 6/5 flier with trample that gains control of every artifact a player controls when it deals them combat damage. Mana rocks and Treasures all count.

2. Make every red spell cheaper. Commander's Sphere becomes Ruby Medallion (610 decks, 41.4%, $14.58): "Red spells you cast cost {1} less to cast." Lathliss costs five with it. Bitter Reunion (52.5%) becomes The Fire Crystal (456 of 1,426 decks, 32.0%, $7.54), which has the same discount and gives every creature you control haste. Bitter Reunion only gave haste once, for {1} and a sacrifice. Tico MTG: "I am really happy with Ruby because it lets me cast multiple spells in the same turn."

3. Turn Treasures and planeswalker loyalty into Dragons. Hit the Mother Lode becomes Goldspan Dragon (667 decks, 45.2%, $11.63), a hasty 4/4 flier that makes a Treasure when it attacks and makes your Treasures tap for two mana. With Ganax out, that's two mana from every Dragon that enters. Basilisk Collar fdc-246fdc-246 card artfdc-246Shop on TCGplayer (55.2%) becomes Sarkhan, Fireblood (494 decks, 33.5%, $0.45): three mana, and its +1 adds two mana that can only be spent on Dragon spells.

4. Find your best Dragon on demand. Count on Luck fdc-147fdc-147 card artfdc-147Shop on TCGplayer (53.9%) becomes Sarkhan's Triumph (474 decks, 32.1%, $2.54), a three-mana instant that searches your library for a Dragon creature card. Cast it at the end of an opponent's turn, then play what you found on yours.

5. Swap the sweepers for ones that spare your side. Breath Weapon (49.2%) becomes Desolation of Smaug (455 of 1,255 decks, 36.3%, $0.31). Both deal damage to each non-Dragon creature, but Desolation deals 3 instead of 2 and adds four mana that can only be spent on Dragon spells. Wipe the board and cast a Dragon in the same turn. The Elder Dragon War becomes Wrathful Red Dragon (537 decks, 36.4%, $10.09): "Whenever a Dragon you control is dealt damage, it deals that much damage to any target that isn't a Dragon."

6. Spend the big money on one payoff. Outpost Siege fdc-169fdc-169 card artfdc-169Shop on TCGplayer (52.2%) becomes Terror of the Peaks otj-149otj-149 card artotj-149Shop on TCGplayer (496 decks, 33.6%, $28.81). Whenever another creature you control enters, Terror deals damage equal to that creature's power to any target. With Lathliss out, one nontoken Dragon means two triggers: its own power, then 5 from her token.

7. Optional land swap. Temple of the False God is EDHREC's most-cut land (44.9%), and it taps for nothing until you have five lands. Path of Ancestry frc-77frc-77 card artfrc-77Shop on TCGplayer replaces it in 320 decks (21.7%, $0.17) and scries when its mana casts a Dragon.

How the swaps change the Reign of Dragons precon

The ten swaps side by side, with EDHREC counts and Scryfall prices as of October 23, 2026:

OutCut byInDecks (share)Price
Goddric, Cloaked Reveler77.9%Ganax, Astral Hunter825 (55.9%)$5.07

Outpost Siege52.2%Terror of the Peaks496 (33.6%)$28.81
Breath Weapon49.2%Desolation of Smaug455 (36.3%)$0.31

Dragon cards go from 19 to 24 and creatures from 28 to 31. Average nonland mana value rises a little, from 3.73 to 3.87, but two of the adds knock {1} off every red spell, so the deck plays faster than that number says. The ten adds total $82.74, and Terror of the Peaks is about a third of that by itself. The five cheapest (Desolation of Smaug, Sarkhan, Fireblood, Hellkite Tyrant, Sarkhan's Triumph and Ganax) cost $10.09 together, so buy those first.

The Ganax combo that ends in a draw

One card on popular upgrade lists doesn't mix with Ganax. Draconic Visitor fra-80fra-80 card artfra-80Shop on TCGplayer, a five-mana 5/5 Dragon from Reality Fracture and the first add in Tico MTG's video, turns any artifact token you'd create into a 5/5 flying Dragon instead. Put it next to Ganax and the Treasure Ganax makes becomes a Dragon, that Dragon entering makes Ganax trigger again, and so on forever.

Neither card says "may," so you can't stop. Commander Spellbook's entry for the pair notes it "creates a mandatory infinite loop that'll cause the game to end in a draw if it isn't interacted with," and that's rule 104.4b: a loop of mandatory actions with no way to stop makes the game a draw. With Terror of the Peaks or Scourge of Valkas on the battlefield, each new Dragon also deals damage as it enters, so the loop can kill the table before the game is drawn. Without one of them, you've drawn a game you were probably winning.

It's also a two-card infinite combo, which the bracket rules don't want at a Bracket 2 table. If you want Draconic Visitor's Treasure-to-Dragon trick, play it and leave Ganax out.

Bracket check after the upgrade

None of the ten adds is a Game Changer on Scryfall, and the precon had none, so the upgraded list still has zero. Wizards' Bracket 2 description asks for "no game changers, two-card combos, or mass land denial," and nothing above breaks that if you skip the Ganax and Visitor pair. Hellkite Tyrant's win condition needs twenty artifacts, which is a long way from a combo.

Lathliss or another commander?

On EDHREC's page for the precon, Lathliss leads every other commander pick by more than ten to one. Next come 130 decks with Sarkhan, Dragon Ascendant fdc-172fdc-172 card artfdc-172Shop on TCGplayer and 103 with Smaug the Magnificent, a card that isn't even in the box. We'd keep Lathliss. She doubles every Dragon you cast, and none of the other picks makes more bodies.

Tico MTG, October 3, 2026. His adds include The Fire Crystal, Terror of the Peaks, Ruby Medallion and Draconic Visitor.

The r/EDH thread on the precon had one reply worth repeating for anyone wondering whether mono-red is the dull choice. "You know that saying you build mono R dragons is just building dragons cause it is THE dragon color?" wrote u/SetsudanHana. For a precon meant to teach the format, that's a feature.

Tips for playing Lathliss, Dragon Queen

Cast Lathliss before your other Dragons. She only triggers on Dragons that enter after her. If you have both in hand and six mana, she goes first.

Hold the pump for the attack. {1}{R} gives every Dragon +1/+0 until end of turn, tokens included. With four Dragons attacking, one activation is four extra damage.

Use Blasphemous Act with Wrathful Red Dragon. Blasphemous Act deals 13 damage to each creature, so each of your Dragons is dealt 13 and Wrathful Red Dragon has each one deal 13 to any target that isn't a Dragon. The Dragons die, but the triggers still resolve, because a triggered ability exists on the stack independently of its source (rule 113.7a). Magmaquake works the other way round: it only hits creatures without flying, so your Dragons survive it.

Mind the commander tax. Recasting Lathliss after removal costs {2} more each time (rule 903.8), so eight mana the second time. Swiftfoot Boots in the box and Lightning Greaves msc-202msc-202 card artmsc-202Shop on TCGplayer as a later add both protect her. Our commander tax guide has the math.

How we checked this

On October 23, 2026 we read EDHREC's JSON page for the Reign of Dragons precon: its Lathliss deck count, the "Cards to Add" and "Cards to Cut" lists, the land lists and the commander counts. We checked the precon's 100 cards against Wizards' Foundations Commander decklist article, which matched EDHREC's list card for card. Card text, Game Changer flags and prices come from Scryfall's API the same day; each price is the cheapest nonfoil paper printing in US dollars. Mana values and creature and Dragon counts are our own count from that list. The Ganax loop is from Commander Spellbook's combo entry, checked against the September 25, 2026 Comprehensive Rules.

Our take

The Reign of Dragons precon is a good Lathliss deck that carries too many cards that aren't Dragons. Don't rebuild it. Cut the part-time Dragons and the slow enchantments, add Dragons that make mana, and put Ruby Medallion and The Fire Crystal in to cast them sooner. Start with the five cheap swaps, and if you like the deck, Terror of the Peaks is the one expensive card worth the money.
